Alfred’s Tower and the Fall of the Royal House of Wessex Alfred’s Tower is an impressive monument standing 160.8 feet tall, located in Somerset, England, near Stourhead. Built between 1769 and 1772 by Henry Hoare II, a wealthy banker and owner of the Stourhead estate, it commemorates both King Alfred the Great (King of Wessex from 871 to 899) and the English victory in the Seven Years’ War. The tower is neo-Gothic in style and symbolically marks the spot where, according to tradition, Alfred is said to have gathered his men before the decisive Battle of Edington (878), which ended the Viking invasion of Wessex. As for the fall of the royal house of Wessex, it occurred several generations after Alfred. His descendants continued to rule over unified England, notably Edward the Elder, Æthelstan, and Edgar the Peaceful. But after the death of Edward the Confessor in 1066, the last king of Wessex and descendant of Alfred, the dynasty came to an end. His passing triggered a succession crisis that led to the Norman Conquest : Harold Godwinson took the crown but died at Hastings against William the Conqueror. Thus, Alfred’s Tower embodies the memory of a founding king who saved his people from invaders, while the later history of Wessex ends with the collapse of the Anglo-Saxon dynasty, replaced by Norman kings.
