🐠What are flying fish ⁉️ 🔹There are about 40 species of flying fish, all of which tend to be cigar-shaped with long, wide pectoral fins on either side of their bodies. 🔹Broadly speaking, there are two categories of flying fish: "two-wingers," whose two large pectoral fins comprise most of the flying "lift" surface; and "four-wingers," which also have two enlarged pelvic fins in addition to the two long pectoral fins. 🔹 All flying fish have an asymmetrical, vertically forked tail (a shape known as hypocercel), with vertebrae extending into the longer, bottom lobe of the fork, making it look sort of like a boat’s rudder. @fisheryscience

🐠To help keep your fish healthy, these are a few things that you can do to help your fish stay happy and healthy.💯 🔹Provide a Quality Diet: Your fish should be fed a proper diet every day. Diet will help keep your fish full and not fight with other fish in the tank over food. 🔹High Water Quality: Make sure that the water that your fish is living in is clean using high quality power filters or canister filters, and at the correct temperature. Also, check to make sure that the levels in your fish tank are correct. 🔹Observation of tank: It is best to watch your fish in your tank. This will let you know if your fish is sick or stressed. Early detection of a disease is easier to treat than one that is not detected until later in the disease stage. 🔹Reducing Stress: Make sure that you reduce the stress in your tank. If you have a fish that is bullying other fish or you have just added a new fish to the tank, make sure that your fish are not stressed. @fisheryscience

🔹At Keri, thousands of sardine fish have been surfacing near a beach in Goa for the past few days, providing locals with a visual treat and a bountiful catch. 🔹Experts said it’s a “rare” phenomenon known as ‘sardine run’. Shoals of the marine species are fluttering in shallow waters along the coast at Keri-Terekhol, about 40 km from Panaji, on the Goa-Maharashtra border, according to those living in the vicinity. @fisheryscience

⁉️ What is Anchor worms in fish 🐠 🔹Anchor worms are not actually a type of worm but a large parasitic crustacean from the Lernaea species that can live on your fish. Pond fish are most commonly infected with this species. 🔹Symptoms of Anchor Worms If your fish has Anchor worms, common signs that you would see are red and inflamed scales. If you look close enough, you may even be able to see the body of these parasites sticking out of your fish. Their bodies will look like whitish green thread stuck to your fish. You may also notice that your fish is rubbing its body up against things in its tank. 🔹Treatment of Anchor Worms For larger fish, anchor worms can usually be easily removed by carefully pulling on the body of the parasite. After you have removed the parasites, you can apply topical antibiotic ointment to their scales. 🔹It would be best if you also cleaned the whole tank to get rid of any of the eggs, larvae, or parasites in the tank. @fisheryscience

🐠Exotic Fish Worth 4.5cr Seized At Dibrugarh Airport 🔹Channa Barca, also known as the Barca snakehead, is a soughtafter species found in the freshwater bodies of southeast Asia. 🔹DIBRUGARH: In a major operation, the forest department on Thursday thwarted an attempt to smuggle 500 rare Channa Barca at Dibrugarh Airport, making it one of the largest seizures of exotic fish in recent times. 🔹The fish worth Rs 4.5 crore in the international market were seized from two individuals identified as Sridhan Sarkar and Jiten Sarkar, residents of Guijan area in Tinsukia district. They were intercepted while trying to board an Indigo flight to Kolkata. 🔹The accused admitted during questioning that they had purchased the fish from various individuals in rural pockets of Tinsukia district, paying Rs 400 per kilogram. The duo had planned to smuggle the fish to countries such as Indonesia, Malaysia, China and Japan. 🔹A single live Channa Barca fish costs between Rs 75,000 to Rs 80,000 in the Indian market. Officials in Japan have admitted they are struggling to determine why hundreds of tonnes of fish have washed ashore in recent
Officials in Japan have admitted they are struggling to determine why hundreds of tonnes of fish have washed ashore in recent days. 🔹Earlier this month, an estimated 1,200 tonnes of sardines and mackerel were found floating on the surface of the sea off the fishing port of Hakodate in Hokkaido, forming a silver blanket stretching for more than a kilometre. 🔹On Wednesday, officials in Nakiri, a town on the Pacific coast hundreds of miles south of Hokkaido, were confronted with 30 to 40 tonnes of Japanese scaled sardines, or sappa, which had been observed in the area a couple of days earlier. 🔹Local fishers scrambled to collect the fish, fearing their carcasses would lower the oxygen content of the water as they decompose and damage the marine environment. 🔹“I’ve never seen anything like this before,” a fisher who has worked in the area for 25 years told the Mainichi Shimbun. “It was only around last year that we began to catch sappa in Nakiri. It makes me wonder if the marine ecosystem is changing.” Know more

🔹Climate change threatens a growing number of species, from Atlantic salmon to green turtles, today’s update to the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species™ reveals. 🔹The update, released at the COP28 UN climate conference in the United Arab Emirates, also includes the first global freshwater fish assessment, and highlights the impact of illegal logging and trade on mahogany. 🔹Conservation efforts have successfully brought two antelope species back from the brink of extinction, but changing climatic conditions could undermine their future. The scientists of the Zoological Survey of India (ZSI) have discovered a new species of a vibrant orange coloured deep water
The scientists of the Zoological Survey of India (ZSI) have discovered a new species of a vibrant orange coloured deep water marine fish from Digha Mohana in West Bengal. The new species, commonly known as gurnards or sea-robins, belongs to the family Triglidae. Named Pterygotrigla intermedica, it has characters quite similar to species like Pterygotrigla hemisticta, said Anil Mohapatra, a senior scientists and in-charge of ZSI’s Estuarine Biology Regional Center, Gopalpur in Odisha, who led the discovery of the new species. It is the fourth species of Pterygotrigla genus reported in India so far, he said, and there are a total 178 species of the Triglidae family worldwide. The species was caught by a local fisher on October 20, 2018, along with other fishes. The researchers collected a total of 24 specimens from the Digha Mohana fishing harbour during their study of by-catch components along the northern part of the east coast of India.
