With Prelims 2024 less than 3 weeks away, these five ideas can help you revise more effectively. Firstly, use active recall. Whenever you read something, try to recall the major categories and points. This technique helps you identify any gaps in your knowledge and allows you to fill them immediately, ensuring a more thorough understanding of the material. Secondly, employ spaced repetition. If you're studying something intensively for the next three days, make sure to review it again ten days later. This method reinforces your memory over time and ensures that the information stays fresh in your mind. Thirdly, mix and match your subjects. Study a difficult subject alongside an easier one. When you get frustrated with the hard subject, switch to the easier one for a breather before returning to the challenging material. This approach keeps you productive without burning out and helps maintain a steady study rhythm. Next, use the Feynman technique. Try to explain a concept in your own words to someone else. If they are confused, it indicates that you don’t understand the concept well enough yet. This method ensures you have a clear and deep understanding of the material and can explain it effectively. Finally, practice with previous year questions (PYQs). When attempting these questions, try to answer them before looking at the solutions. This practice builds your problem-solving skills, which will be invaluable during the exam. By incorporating these strategies into your study routine, you can enhance your revision and be better prepared for the Prelims. Best of luck with your preparation!

During UPSC preparation, we focus on General Studies (GS), CSAT, previous years' questions (PYQs), the syllabus, and answer writing. We focus on many things, but sometimes we forget the basics. For example, if my stomach is hurting, my back is hurting, and whenever I sit to study, I start missing my ex, then naturally, I won't be able to use the rest of the preparation in the exam. So, this is a gentle reminder to focus on the basics. Eat healthy, sleep well, and take care of your mental health.

Do you remember what you studied last month? Forget about last month. Do you remember what you studied yesterday? If you don't remember yesterday's work, it's okay. Do you remember what you studied this morning? If you don't have an answer to all three, then this is where active recall might be very helpful for you. Every time you read a chapter, try to recall the sections. For example, if you've read a chapter on geography, landforms, try to recall how many types of mountains there were, how many types of plateaus, how many rivers, and what other details were included. Review the sections after every chapter. And after covering every book, try to mentally review what the index of the book was, which was the first chapter, which was the second, and what topics were covered in each chapter. This is hard work. It requires effort, and our brains don't naturally like to put in this effort. But in the last month before prelims, if you can do this, I can guarantee that your marks will start increasing slowly. Best of luck.

You must have heard about post-mortems in crime thrillers and dramas, where we analyze the reasons for a murder after it has occurred. However, you can conduct a similar exercise right now for your UPSC preparation. We can call it a pre-mortem. The idea is to assume that you have failed the prelims in 2024. Thinking about it today, what would likely be the reasons for this failure? This is an exercise I did for myself when I was preparing. My answers were very simple: I was distracted, I was not studying, and I lacked consistency. Identifying these issues made it clear what my problems were, and I knew I had to address these problems first. Best of luck!
