Sahara desert. It is roughly 3 times the size of India. With high temperatures, it has one of the harshest climates on the Earth. Now here is a question for you. _How many trees does the Sahara desert have?_ You’ll be surprised to know the number. Most of us would struggle to count the number of trees in a garden. It’s not a simple task to count trees in a desert! Then who counted them? 😄 Researchers at the University of Copenhagen developed an Artificial Intelligence program. They fed it with thousands of images with trees. Looking at them, the AI learnt to recognise trees. Next, they gave images of the Sahara desert taken by a NASA satellite. Within a few hours, the AI counted the number of trees in the desert. This number surprised even the researchers. There are over *180 crore trees* in what many consider a wasteland. If humans had to count them, imagine how many years it would have taken. Now, the team behind this is planning to create a global database of all the trees that grow outside the forest area.
