on august 9, 2000, at 3:30 am under clear skies photographer Yoshio Moriyama got the assignment of a lifetime: to shoot two Schuppan 962s cruising Tokyo’s Shuto Expressway at dawn for GENROQ magazine.
both cars were the work of Vern Schuppan, Le Mans winner and former Porsche factory driver. he took the legendary Group C 962 and produced a tiny run of road-going versions.
the versions were very different. the black 962LM retained the original Porsche Group C race-car bodywork. the silver 962CR had a smoother, GT-inspired design. just two LMs and three CRs were delivered to Japan.
spotting one of these cars on the road is rare. seeing both together is almost impossible.
moriyama followed them through tunnels and overpasses, and GENROQ later wrote: “at dawn, two of Vern Schuppan’s Porsches set off through Tokyo’s concrete jungle. they surged forward with almost astonishing acceleration, showcasing immense power and finely honed intelligence. these supercars may never be seen together again.”
