"He who nurses ill will against me may his joys (in life) increase. He who is not my friend, may God be his friend. He who puts thorns in my way on account of enmity, may every flower that blossoms in the garden of his life be without thorns"
- Shaikh Abu Said Abu-l Khair
"O God! If i worship you for fear of Hell, burn me in Hell,
And if i worship you in hope of Paradise, exclude me from Paradise.
But if i worship you for your own sake, grudge me not your everlasting beauty"
- Rabi'a Al-Basri, female Sufi mystic
“No relationship can truly grow if you go on holding back. If you remain clever and go on safeguarding and protecting yourself, only personalities meet, and the essential centers remain alone. Then only your mask is related, not you. Whenever such a thing happens, there are four persons in the relationship, not two. Two false persons go on meeting, and the two real persons remain worlds apart.” - Osho
“True fasting lay in rejecting evil, holding ones tongue, suppressing ones hatred, and banishing ones lust, evil words, lying and betrayal of vows”
St. Basil
It’s important to note, that the real reason why we should fast goes beyond any of the health benefits it provides, it transcends that. Fasting is good for the soul. We fast so we can feel the thirst of the thirsty and feel the hunger of the hungry. So we can learn self restraint. so we can purify our souls of sin, cleanse our hearts of greed and hatred. So we can practice being more charitable, humble, patient and truthful. Most importantly, so we can remember God and give him thanks for everything we have, for we owe everything to him. Fasting is not just abstaining from food and drink. True fasting is fasting of the tongue as well.
“Whoever does not give up false statements, and evil deeds, and speaking bad words to others, god is not in need of his (fasting) leaving his food and drink.”
- Sahih Al Bukhari (73/83)
