| 17 | I attempted both GS and CSAT yesterday and scored around 98 marks in GS Paper 1 and 102 in CSAT. Although I haven’t studied GS seriously in recent years, my background in Economics and wide reading helped me answer several questions. This year, CSAT was tougher than before, not easier than in 2023 or 2024. Many strong candidates who cleared it comfortably earlier are now facing a tough challenge, suggesting this level of difficulty might be the new normal. The GS Paper 1 had tricky framing but more conventional topics compared to 2023’s unusually hard paper, feeling closer to 2024 in difficulty. The expected cut-off for the General category is likely between 85 and 90 marks, with slightly lower marks for OBC/SC/ST categories. If your score is below that, don’t lose heart—many sincere aspirants are in the same position. Take some time to reflect and plan your next steps. If your GS score is above 80, you should start preparing for Mains immediately. Answer keys can have errors, and UPSC’s interpretation may differ, so with only 12 weeks left, every day counts. Starting your preparation now will help, regardless of the final result. Remember, clearing Prelims is not about luck but about years of consistent hard work. If you’ve made it this far, stay focused and give your best in the next stage.

| 20 | Super Pro Tip Last 9 Days:
Priority of subjects for revision should be as follows, in the order mentioned (based on the experience of scoring 40–50 marks above the cut-off
1. Polity – You can mark all questions correctly if you know Laxmikanth well. But even if you get 3–4 questions wrong, it puts you at a disadvantage in the competition.
2. Mapping – Geography, Environment, Historical Geography, and IR Mapping together give you about 15 questions in Prelims. All are doable if you’ve revised well. Great hit ratio; low-hanging fruit.
3. Economy – If you’ve done good revision of Banking, Fiscal Policy, Monetary Policy, Money and Capital Markets, BoP, Taxation, WTO, IMF, WB, and government schemes, you’ll be in a good position to get around 75% net marks.
4. Geography (Static) – Just the NCERTs (with very few pages compared to other subjects) can give you over 80% accuracy.
5. Environment – A subject where net correct marks are generally not as good as the above four. Still, a last-minute revision of key topics like Pollution, Government Acts, Conventions, Species, and Agriculture can boost your hit rate.
6. History and Culture – This subject should be the lowest in the priority list. I strongly believe that most Prelims questions here are tackled through legacy memory built over the past year or more. Everyone will mark a lot of questions incorrectly in this section—it’s an eliminator. Just tread cautiously in terms of the number of attempts. Best use of your time here is to focus on high-yield topics like Buddhism and Jainism.
7. Science and Tech – A subject better tackled with common sense and logical guesswork. Revision doesn’t help as much here, but you must still go through applications of emerging technologies like AI, Crypto, Biotech, Space Tech, Nano Tech, etc. Reading the newspaper throughout the year plays a crucial role.
Current Affairs, I believe, is just static that was in the news—so I didn’t mention it separately. Ultimately, static is what gives you marks in Prelims.
Study hard and revise as much as you can.
Nobody can be absolutely confident about Prelims—after all, the cut-off itself is around 45%. So everyone is in the same boat right now.
