Some people think that companies and private individuals should pay to clean up the pollution that they produce, not the government To what extent do you agree or disagree? Industrial pollution has lately been a focal point of modern-day discussions for their alarming nature and scale. In this respect, it has been proposed that one way to address this issue is to make companies and individuals pay for the environmental damage rather than use public funds. Though this suggestion may seem appealing to many, I take issue with this proposal. To start, there are some valid reasons why companies and individual citizens should be expected to cover expenses associated with the environment. Firstly, companies make large profits at the cost of the environment, so they can afford to pay to curb pollution levels. This, indeed, is a standard practice in some developed nations of the world where powerful companies fund non-profit cleaning organizations that are set up to maintain our natural surroundings. Such practice not only helps restore the environment, but also the government who often struggles to solve other major issues such as poverty and poor education. Finally, if private citizens pay for their pollution, they will become more mindful towards the environment and pollute less. Nevertheless, I am of the opinion that the government should take full responsibility as far as the environmental issues go. The main reason has to do with the fact that most production companies worldwide pay their share of the pollution costs through taxes. Revenue generated from these taxes is often sufficient and should be seen as reparations paid by giant companies which cause pollution. Similarly, in most countries, citizens already pay taxes to make up for their carbon footprint. Therefore, the suggestion to make people and companies pay even more for pollution is likely to be met with general public disapproval. All clothing shops should ask customers to recycle an old item of clothing before they buy a new one. To what extent do you agree or disagree? It has been suggested that all stores specializing in selling clothes should demand its customers to recycle old clothing items before their next purchase. To my mind, this suggestion is worth exploring further, though I should admit that it may not be an entirely practical one. In realistic terms, this so-called “recycle your old clothes” policy can prove difficult to implement for several reasons. The most common one is perhaps the sentimental value an old article of clothing holds to the wearer. Most people keep their clothes from earlier years because they remind them of a particular phase in their life. In many instances, including mine, mothers keep outfits their children wear over the years so that one day they can reminisce old days together through these items. Besides, it is not uncommon to see some people gift their old clothes to their relatives or friends, which, in a sense, makes for recycling. I would, however, argue that there are many upsides to recycling old clothes. From an economic standpoint, recycling clothes costs less, hence can be bought at much lower prices than new ones. Their price point makes them an appealing option not only to thrifty customers, who always look to make savings, but also store owners who wish to cut down costs and attract more customers. In fact, I remember visiting a second-hand clothes store in the US once and seeing people queueing to shop there. This, however, was not the case at a boutique I visited later that day. Finally, all forms of recycling benefit the environment seeing as fewer resources will be used to manufacture and ship products, and by extension, clothes.
