Ten years ago today, Gus and Tracy released Castles. This three-track EP was produced solely by Nedarb and created during the summer of 2016, when Gus was living with a friend in Studio City, just weeks after first meeting Tracy. In May 2016, Gus returned home to Long Beach to visit and created the second half of Crybaby. On June 8, he headed back to Los Angeles and released Crybaby two days later. His living plans fell through, and he ended up staying with his friend Elias in Studio City. While there, Gus was busy making music with a multitude of collaborators, receiving beats from producers he both knew and didn't know. He continued working with Nedarb, who had produced California Girls that winter. Gus trusted Ned and valued their creative partnership. On June 12, they went together to a radio interview with Ham On Everything to promote Crybaby. Gus was gaining traction in Los Angeles and told me in our conversations that more people were coming to hear him perform at shows. Nedarb had introduced Gus to Tracy in May, and the two had gone on to make "White Tee" together. By the end of June, Gus was recording wherever and whenever he could between Elias's small apartment and Airbnbs, and wanted to make more music with Tracy. On June 28, he recorded "tears" with Smokeasac, and "pain" and "white wine" with Tracy and Ned. This was the only time Ned made beats in front of Gus. Later that night, they linked up with videographer Wiggy to shoot a music video for "white wine", and Elias recorded Slug Christ's verse for "pain". On June 30,"castles" was created. Gus reached out to artist @wavybabe_ that same day for artwork, and detailed his vision on July 3. Hours later, Dustin sent back the completed cover art, and on July 4, Gus and Tracy released the EP on SoundCloud. Castles represents one of the chronological links between Crybaby and Hellboy, and the beginning of Gus's friendship with Tracy. It also captures an exciting yet uncertain period in his career, when he was couch-surfing around Los Angeles while steadily gaining ground in the local scene. Shortly after releasing Castles, Gus moved into The Loft and embarked on the next chapter of his musical journey
