These defenses are also a good opportunity to network and meet people, or even make contacts with the presenter. I once went to Tehran to attend a defense - drove my car to Marqad-e Imam, then took a train & bus to Danishgah Imam Sadiq 😅. It was late in the evening (past 9pm) and was a long walk to find the specific class the defense was taking place in. This was for Dr. Gerami's defense and his supervisor was Dr. Pakatchi. There were several critics/judges on the panel and each shared some very interesting points that I jotted down. It was this one opportunity I ceased, that eventually led me to work closely with Dr. Gerami, exposed me to further scholars in the field and few days ago our work was published in Brill.
