If everyone wore a suit except the manager...

Repetition is one of the crucial principles of design. It makes the audience rethink again and again. The manager stood out because others followed the same pattern, while he broke it. The same applies to design: when everything looks aligned and spaced accordingly, breaking one element creates what we call a hook. There must be a rule every element should follow, but there is one bad guy who doesn't obey it. And that is the one who stands out.
