The United States, United Kingdom, and France have blocked a joint request by Pakistan and China to add the Balochistan Liberation Army (BLA) and its Majeed Brigade to the UN Security Council’s 1267 sanctions list. According to reports, the three countries placed a technical hold, citing insufficient evidence linking the groups to Al‑Qaeda or ISIL.
Pakistan’s UN Ambassador Asim Iftikhar Ahmed raised the issue at a Security Council meeting on Afghanistan, stating that entities including the BLA and Majeed Brigade have safe havens in Afghanistan with over 60 camps used for cross‑border operations. He noted that Pakistan and China jointly requested the listing and urged the Council to act quickly.
The United States had already designated the BLA as a Specially Designated Global Terrorist in 2019 and, last month, also designated both the BLA and Majeed Brigade as Foreign Terrorist Organizations.
