if you do not experience same-sex sexual desire, but have LGBTQ+ people in your life, there are many ways you can be an ally. These range widely, from one-on-one support for your friend, to recognizing your own internalized homophobia, to the challenging homophobic social norms. Ways to support LGBTQ+ people in your life include: • Not making anti-gay jokes • Speaking out against people who make anti-gay statements • Listening to your LGBTQ+ friends talk about their perspectives and feelings about specific issues and challenges they face • Interrogating the homophobia you carry within you and challenging it • Being a supportive friend that is available for both deeper conversations and fun experiences (a good antidote to internalized homophobia is fun and joy!)

Come Out If You Feel You’re Ready(to the ppl you trust) If you have already come out about your same-sex sexual desire, congratulations! (happy for you🩷)If you have not come out yet take your time. If and when you feel ready, begin to share your truth While in the closet, internalized homophobia can feel even stronger because we can feel there is “so much to lose” by coming out However, coming out to parents (seems impossible) and loved ones can be both an immense relief and an opening to connect with other members of the LGBTQ+ community. Moreover, if you are closeted partially because of the homophobic beliefs of some of your family and community members, your coming out may help them to reconsider some of their homophobic beliefs (be careful do this only if you you are sure that they can change their beliefs)

Learn to Accept & Love Yourself At the heart of internalized homophobia is a rejection of one’s same-sex sexual desire. The impact of this type of self hatred cannot be understated–it can permeate across many aspects of one’s life, even those we might consider to be unrelated to sexuality. To counter this self rejection , spend time learning to accept and love yourself by embracing your strengths, developing a mindfulness practice, and managing the way you compare yourself to others

If you are an LGBTQ+ person experiencing some of the detrimental effects of internalized homophobia in your life, there are useful ways to cope with this challenge Many of them involve things you can do on your own and some include collaboration with community members and with mental health professional

Internalised homophobia and oppression can have a huge impact on your mental health, as well as influence your thoughts, feelings, and behaviours. Davies & Neal believe that it is virtually impossible for any person from lgbtq+ who has grown up in the UK or Ireland (the arabic countries as well)not to have internalised society’s negative messages about homosexuality

Being attracted to unavailable people: an example may be a gay man who happens to “be in love with a friend who’s straight”. When this pattern of being attracted to unavailable men is repeated over and over, it may be the result of internalised homophobia

Heterophobia like putting down or even avoiding heterosexuals is an example of reverse discrimination from some gay and bisexual people to heterosexual people(smth that may makes them feel safe)

Feeling superior to heterosexuals the idea that gay people are “better” than heterosexuals. Examples include attitudes such as “gay men have a better dress sense than straight men” or “gay men are better listeners than straight men”

In their book, “Pink Therapy”, Davies & Neal (1996) illustrate some examples of how internalised homophobia and oppression may affect gay and bisexual men. Some of these examples include:

Contempt for those that are not like ourselves or contempt for those who seem like ourselves Sometimes distancing by engaging in homophobic behaviours – ridicule, harassment, verbal or physical attacks on other LGBTQ+ people. Projection of prejudice onto another target group. Becoming psychologically abused or abusive or remaining in an abusive relationship. Attempts to pass as heterosexual, sometimes marrying someone of the other sex to gain social approval or in hope of ‘being cured’. Increased fear and withdrawal from friend and relatives. Shame or depression; defensiveness; anger or bitterness. School truancy or dropping out of school. Also, work place absenteeism or reduced productivity. Continual self-monitoring of one’s behaviours, mannerisms, beliefs, and ideas. Clowning as a way of acting out society’s negative stereotypes. Mistrust and destructive criticism of LGBT community leaders. Reluctance to be around or have concern for children for fear of being seen as a paedophile. Conflicts with the law

Internalised homophobia manifests itself in varying ways that can be linked to mental health. Examples include: Denial of your sexual orientation to yourself and others Attempts to alter or change your sexual your orientation. Feeling you are never good enough. Engaging in obsessive thinking and/or compulsive behaviours. Under-achievement or even over-achievement as a bid for acceptance. Low self esteem, negative body image. Contempt for the more open or obvious members of the LGBTQ+ community. Contempt for those at earlier stages of the coming out process. Denial that homophobia, heterosexism, biphobia or sexism are serious social problems
