Nike Is Ceding Ground in China and Other Markets Where It Operates

Nike shares have fallen fivefold—from an all-time high of $179 in November 2021 to below $37 in September 2026. The stock is at 2013–2014 levels.
Nike is not the only company in the apparel and footwear sector whose value has fallen dramatically over the past few years. In particular, shares of Lululemon Athletica Inc. (LULU) have declined by more than 80% from their 2024 peak. At the same time, there is no uniform trend in the sector—the reasons for the collapse in these companies’ stock prices coincide only partially.
Nike took its first hit in 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic, when revenue fell by 40–60% (across different segments and regions). The company’s new problems began as early as 2024 and intensified in 2025, when revenue declines in certain regions and segments reached double digits.
The problems first emerged in China and then spread to other markets. A year and a half ago, the decline in sales in its key segment (footwear) in its home market reached 14%. Each quarterly report triggered a sharp drop in the stock price.
Operating profitability also declined, although, in our view, the situation with it remains relatively healthy, and in the latest reporting quarter the company received a benefit of about $1 billion from the refund of a previously paid tariff, which provided one-time support to its margin.
As a result, the company’s shares are being removed from the S&P 100. In fact, this event is unlikely to significantly affect the stock price. The mechanical outflow from funds, according to top1markets’ estimate, will amount to about $22 million, or about 600,000 shares at current quotes. Average daily volume is estimated at approximately 25 million shares. However, psychologically, this is a bad signal.
Management notes on calls that the business is currently in a far from simple situation. The company is making efforts to restore demand in China and continues to modernize its retail network, as renovated stores show better results and inefficient locations are being closed. There is no official guidance, but management acknowledges that it expects a revenue decline in the low single digits in Q1 FY2027.
The investment community has differing views on the future of the company’s shares—the range of estimates is from $23 to $90. On the one hand, Nike is not in a position to give up. Positive operating cash flow and a solid cushion allow it to pay dividends, the yield on which is about 4.5% per annum. Therefore, the share of short positions is relatively small, about 6.5% of the number of shares in free float. At the same time, there are not many growth drivers. The company is losing market share, and management does not expect a rapid recovery.
The decline in direct sales indicates that Nike is facing strong competition in its segments. In 2026–2030, Generation Z will become the dominant consumer group; its consumer habits and attitudes toward brands differ significantly from those of other consumer groups. The wholesale sales channel will depend heavily on the macro environment. At the same time, another key problem has not been eliminated—despite the resilient position of high-income consumers, Nike continues to lose market to cheaper brands and is betting on promotion in the professional sports environment. | 222 | 4 | 0 | 4 | Loading... | |

That's becoming outdated now...
BABAs Cloud's external revenue just grew 45%.
AI-related product revenue has now grown triple digits for 12 consecutive quarters.
Then you still have Taobao, Tmall, international commerce and the rest of the Alibaba ecosystem.
I'm starting to look at $BABA as an AI/cloud company sitting underneath one of the largest commerce businesses in the world.
