🔤 The sun was setting behind the hills, painting the sky an orange that looked like liquid fire, and Kikyo placed her bow against a tree trunk, as she did whenever she knew she wasn't alone. She didn't need to turn to feel his presence: the light rustling of the branches, his silent yet unmistakable step.
"You're late," she said, without reproach in her voice.
"They saw me near the village," Inuyasha replied, emerging from the shadows of the trees. "I had to take a longer route."
They sat side by side on the grass, as they had so often before, on that border between the forest and the cultivated fields that seemed to exist only for the two of them. Kikyo told him about the day she'd spent purifying a well haunted by a minor spirit, a simple but tiring task; Inuyasha listened without interrupting, his eyes fixed on her silhouette illuminated by the sunset.
“Sometimes I wonder,” he said at one point, “what would happen if I stopped being who I am. If I became human.”
Kikyo turned to look at him. “And what would happen?”
“I could stay in the village. Walk down the street without people running away or throwing stones at me. I could… be close to you, without hiding every time the sun sets.”
She looked down at her hands, those same hands that held sacred arrows meant to strike creatures like him, and for a moment the weight of her role weighed more heavily than usual. “I would never ask you to change who you are for me,” she said softly. “But if that’s what you truly want, then we’ll find a way.”
Inuyasha took her hand, a gesture that to anyone else would have seemed timid, almost awkward, but which carried the weight of a promise between them. “I don’t want this to escape who I am. I want it so I can stay with you, without the world getting in the way.”
The sky turned violet, then dark blue, and the first stars appeared timidly above their heads. They said nothing else for a while: they didn't need to. They both knew that fate rarely grants easy endings to those who choose to love beyond the boundaries the world has drawn—and yet, in that suspended moment, they chose to believe anyway, as they had every night before 🔤
