What Is Your Response to Those Who Criticize Shaykh Salmān Al-ʿImād, Claiming That He Wastes His Time in Refutations? ——— 📩 Question: What is your response to those students of knowledge who speak against Shaykh Salmān al-ʿImād, saying that he wastes his time in refutations and neglects some important areas? 📨 Answered by: Ash-Shaykh Abū ʿAmr ʿAbd al-Karīm al-Ḥajūrī حفظه الله تعالى ——— Shaykh Salmān al-ʿImād’s refutations are among the finest refutations. He is engaged in good, and he has daʿwah (calling to Allāh). Do not think that he is occupied only with refutations; rather, he has lessons, he has daʿwah, and he possesses beneficial knowledge. You yourselves can see and hear this from his lectures, his beneficial words, and the like. I have also come across some of his books containing scholarly and well-grounded refutations. Yes, indeed. If all of Ahl al-Sunnah were to abandon refuting these falsehood-makers, the people would be misled, many people would be led astray, and great harm would befall them. Therefore, we say: Not everyone should be occupied with refutations. Yes. Because some who engage in refuting and discussing issues may give a general response, and the innovator only becomes more inflated with pride and arrogance. In such a case, it would have been better had he not replied at all. However, with the refutations of Shaykh Salmān, he takes a person’s speech section by section, discusses it, and exposes its contradictions. Such a method as you have heard is among the communal obligations (farḍ kifāyah); if some undertake it, the burden is lifted from the rest. So this work should not be belittled. We continually repeat that the matter of forbidding evil is an obligation from the obligations of the religion. However, we do criticize the one who spends his entire life engaged only in refutations. Some people may become so absorbed in refutations that they neglect other important matters. But as for one who refutes those who truly deserve to be refuted, then regarding Shaykh Salmān — may Allāh preserve him — we have not seen him refute anyone who did not deserve a response. Rather, he replies in a manner that, by Allāh’s permission, makes the matter clear to the one being refuted. We do not claim perfection for him. Nevertheless, I have examined some of his refutations, and they are powerful refutations. Answered by Ash-shaykh Yaḥyā al-Ḥajūrī ——— الحمد لله والصلاة والسلام على رسول الله وعلى آله وأصحابه ومن اتبع هداه، أما بعد، All praise is due to Allāh, and may blessings and peace be upon the Messenger of Allāh, his family, his Companions, and those who follow his guidance. To proceed: فتنة واسعة، اشتملت على كذب وتزوير وتحريش وفرقة شديدة وظلم، تحقير لما عظم الله سبحانه وتعالى، وتعصب مقيت، حزبية شريرة، فهي اشتملت على أمور، كثير منهم الآن عرفها، وبعضهم ما زال أعمى، ومبناها على الحسد. It was a far-reaching fitnah. It contained lies, forgery, incitement, severe division, and oppression. It involved belittling that which Allāh, Glorified and Exalted, has magnified, repugnant fanaticism, and evil ḥizbiyyah. Thus, it encompassed many matters that many of those involved have now come to recognize them, while some still remain blind. Its foundation was envy (ḥasad). ولكن الكتاب جمع جملة طيبة، مرتبة ترتيبا طيبا. However, the book has compiled a good amount of material and arranged it in an excellent manner. أخونا سلمان حفظه الله، جمع جمعا طيبا ورتب ترتيبا طيبا، وما وصله مما قد نشر وحفظه حسين [ابن أخ الشيخ يحيى] وأرسله إليه أو غيره مما قد نشر، طرحه وعلق عليه بتعليقات جيدة ورتب ترتيبا طيبا. Our brother Salmān, may Allāh preserve him, gathered the material well and organized it well. Whatever reached him from what had been published and preserved by Ḥusayn [the nephew of shaykh Yaḥyā], and sent to him—or from other materials that had been published—he included it and added beneficial comments upon it, arranging it in a commendable manner. يشكر على ما صنع، فهو أحسن ترتيب لسياق الفتنة، ولم يكن فيه استيعاب لكل شيء كما هو معروف، لا هو ولا نحن استوعبنا كل شيء. He is to be thanked for what he has done. It is the best-organized presentation of the sequence of this fitnah. It did not, of course, encompass every single detail, as is well known. Neither he nor we have encompassed everything. ولكن فيه ترتيبا طيبا. Nevertheless, it is arranged in an excellent manner. جزاه الله خيرا. May Allāh reward him with goodness. نعم.
