The line graph illustrates the production levels of three main fuels in the UK from 1981 to 2000. Overall, petroleum and natural gas production both rose, with natural gas showing the larger proportional increase, while coal declined considerably, albeit with a sharp dip and partial recovery in the mid-1980s. Notably, petroleum maintained its dominance throughout the period. Regarding petroleum, production stood at about 90 initially before rising to about 139 by 1986. There was then a steady decline to 100 in 1990-91, but the figure recovered and rose gradually, reaching a peak of about 150 in 1999 before dipping slightly to around 146 in 2000. When it comes to natural gas, its growth was relatively consistent without any significant declines. In 1981, natural gas production in the UK stood at around 36, which then rose slightly yet consistently until 1991, reaching about 47. From that year onwards, the figure increased faster until the final year, reaching around 100, almost triple its starting level. In 1981, coal production stood at 80, which remained fairly stable for the next couple of years. However, in 1984, the figure witnessed a sharp fall to approximately 33 before recovering to 60 in 1986. It then declined gradually from 60 to about 36 between 1986 and 2000.
