💻 $1,000 Next-Gen Consoles Could Cost Industry $3.4B
Market-research firm Ampere Analysis warns that if Sony and Microsoft launch next-gen consoles at $1,000 in 2028, the PlayStation 6 and Xbox Project Helix could see 38% lower sales in their first five years compared to PS5 and Xbox Series X|S — wiping $3.4 billion from the console games and services market by 2031.
Ampere outlines three paths to avoid that outcome: delay next-gen beyond 2028 to extend current console lifecycles; hit the 2028 window but offset costs through hardware subsidies, new monetization models, and aggressive digital strategies; or substantially rethink the hardware form factor rather than chasing incremental graphical upgrades, keeping prices lower in the process.
The concern isn't purely hypothetical — the Switch 2, PS5, and Xbox Series X|S have all seen price increases recently amid ongoing chip shortages, and Valve's Steam Machine already exceeds $1,000.

🏢 Dishonored Co-Creator Harvey Smith Founds Black Pony Immersive
Harvey Smith, co-creative director of Dishonored and Dishonored 2, has co-founded Black Pony Immersive alongside Ben Horne, former Arkane production director on Redfall. The Austin, Texas studio is focused on "imaginative first-person action-RPGs set within well-realized worlds, where players create their own memorable experiences with expressive, emergent gameplay systems."
Horne, serving as COO and executive producer, described the team as "purpose-built to make the ambitious games we love — immersive sims." No specific project has been announced yet.
The news comes as Arkane's future remains uncertain and the Dishonored franchise appears to be on hold. Arkane Austin was shut down following Redfall's troubled reception, while Arkane Lyon remains operational. Raphaël Colantonio, who co-directed the original Dishonored, had previously departed to co-found WolfEye Studios, whose upcoming unnamed project is also a first-person action-RPG.

🎮 GTA 6 Footage Looks Different in New Sony PS5 Ad
Sony's new "It Happens On PS5" campaign features snippets of GTA 6 footage — and observers have spotted subtle changes from Trailer 2. The scene of Jason and Lucia on a convertible now appears full-screen without letterboxing, slightly brighter, and Lucia's eyebrows and hair color look marginally different, though altered lighting may account for some of that.
The differences are minor and likely reflect normal development changes. A GTA 6 "Extended Look" trailer is due on Netflix on August 27, and the game itself is set to launch November 19. The PS5 ad also features Marvel's Wolverine and God of War Laufey.

🎮 Simpsons: Hit & Run Creator Hints at Revival
Matt Groening told the audience at Disney's D23 event that "the original game is coming back in some form" — though series producer Matt Selman quickly tempered expectations, responding "Or not," suggesting Groening may have spoken out of turn. Selman did agree a new Hit & Run "would certainly be a treat."
No project has been confirmed. Potential hurdles include licensing the original cast's voices, and navigating multiple stakeholders across Disney and Fox's entertainment assets. The original developer, Radical Entertainment, closed in 2012, though co-founder Ian Wilkinson now runs New Radical Games, which lists porting and remastering among its services.
The Simpsons: Hit & Run launched in 2003 on PS2, GameCube, Xbox, and PC.

🎮 High on Life Is Getting a Full VR Rebuild for 2027
Squanch Games' irreverent shooter High on Life is coming to VR, with Flat2VR Studios handling a ground-up rebuild for Meta Quest, PlayStation VR2, and SteamVR, targeting a 2027 launch.
Flat2VR says it is rebuilding the game to take advantage of VR tech, adding manual interactions with the game's signature sentient guns — including stroking and feeding them. "It's really important that they make sense in gameplay and that they're maintaining the fast, fluid, and powerful feeling of combat," said VR game director Emily O'Neil.
Originally released in 2022, High on Life follows a bounty hunter armed with Gatliens — talking, opinionated alien firearms. Flat2VR also teased a VR port of the 2023 System Shock remake, though details remain sparse.

🏢 Disney's Gaming Revenue Tops $4B as It Eyes Original IPs
Disney's gaming division generated over $4 billion in consumer spend in its most recent fiscal year, up from a $3.5 billion annual average over the prior four years, according to Sean Shoptaw, the company's gaming chief.
Shoptaw confirmed nine Disney gaming franchises have each crossed $1 billion in retail sales, including Kingdom Hearts and Marvel Strike Force — more than half of which launched within the past 12 years. Speaking ahead of D23, he framed games as a "fundamental part of the broader entertainment landscape" and a "key part of Disney's storytelling strategy."
Disney is moving away from movie tie-ins in favour of original narratives built for games, citing Marvel's Wolverine as the model. Its $1.5 billion investment in Epic Games remains central to that strategy, with Shoptaw calling the Fortnite partnership "a really important one" and describing ambitions to build a connected Disney universe within the platform. More Fortnite content is reportedly planned, including a project described as Arc Raiders-style, though details remain unconfirmed.

🏢 Netflix Shuts Down Night School Studio Six Weeks After Launch
Netflix is closing Night School Studio — creators of the Oxenfree series — and Helsinki-based Moonloot, just six weeks after Night School released its horror game Unhinged, which Netflix co-CEO Greg Peters had called one of "our two most successful cloud game debuts" on an investor call.
Netflix acquired Night School in 2021 in its first-ever studio acquisition. Moonloot, founded in 2022, had yet to release a game. The closures follow layoffs of 85% of staff at Refactor Games earlier this month — the developer behind the other title Peters cited as a top cloud game debut.
Netflix stated it is "narrowing its focus" to kids' games, party games, story-driven titles, and "games with mainstream hooks," adding it sees an opportunity to be "more focused in its execution." The company had previously boasted a 600% year-over-year rise in gaming engagement.

🎮 GTA 6 Preorders Could Hit 25M Copies at Launch
Sensor Tower estimates GTA 6 may reach 25 million preorders by its November 19 launch — translating to roughly $2 billion in revenue, which SVP Karl Kontus says would cover the game's development costs and most of its marketing spend.
Take-Two confirmed "unprecedented" preorder numbers but declined to share specifics to avoid misleading investors. Kontus notes the bulk of preorders typically arrive in the final week before launch, and that Rockstar's full marketing push hasn't started yet — a trailer is set for August 27 on Netflix.
On pricing, early preorders skew toward the $100 Ultimate Edition, though Kontus expects the final split between the $80 and $100 versions to land near 50/50. He credited Rockstar for loading the premium tier with exclusive vehicles, weapons, and a custom mod shop rather than "filler content."
GTA 6 launches November 19 on PS5 and Xbox Series X|S.

🎮 Aspyr Confirms More Lord of the Rings Re-Releases Incoming
Aspyr Media has shadow-dropped a Legacy Edition of The Lord of the Rings: War in the North (2011), and confirmed it won't stop there — the studio says "even more classic releases" from the LOTR catalog are coming, though no specific titles or dates were given.
The War in the North Legacy Edition was released under a licensing deal with Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment and is Aspyr's first LOTR title. Other games from that era include Lego The Lord of the Rings, Guardians of Middle-earth, and EA's older Battle for Middle-earth series — all potential candidates for future re-releases.
New LOTR games are also in the pipeline: Kingdom Come developer Warhorse Studios is working on an RPG set in Middle-earth, and Crystal Dynamics is reportedly developing one as well.
