The Srebrenica genocide. 11 July 1995. 31 years ago today. The Bosnian Serb Army (VRS) rounded up and murdered over 8000 Bosniak boys and men. They slit their throats, shot, beheaded, and executed them— and threw them in mass graves. They forcibly displaced the women, children, and elderly. They raped the women and girls. This took place during the Bosnian genocide which began after the collapse of Yugoslavia. While the Bosniaks were Muslim, Serbs Orthodox Christian, and Croats Roman Catholic— they were genetically and ancestrally exactly the same people. They looked the same, spoke the same language and had lived in the same towns for over 500 years. Political manipulation and religious divisions were used to completely destroy that shared identity and divide the South Slavs. The remains of Bosniak victims are still being discovered and identified today.
