Octets in IPv4 An IPv4 address is made up of 4 octets, separated by dots. Example: 192.168.1.10 Each of these numbers represents one 8-bit binary value. For example: 192 >> 11000000 168 >> 10101000 1 >> 00000001 10 >> 00001010

An octet is a group of 8 bits. Since each bit can only be 0 or 1, an octet consists of eight 0s and 1s. For example: 11000000 This is one octet because it contains 8 bits.
