Hi everyone! I know not everyone was able to come to the zoom so I wanted to tell you about me. My name is Jodi Ann Kuchynska and I am from the US. I was born in NY, about 30 minutes from NYC. I went to college and graduate school there as well. When my mother passed I moved to Texas and became a teacher. I taught in Texas and Florida for a total of 17 years. I was mainly a high school history/ social studies teacher for most of that time but over 17 years I taught k-12 all subjects. I decided to come to Ukraine in the fall of 2022 as a humanitarian aid volunteer. While I was here I met and have since married my husband. I still volunteer as much as I can but for this past school year I was also an english teacher within Cambridge programs at schools in Ukraine. I have taught k-11 here as well. My husband and I have two cats, Boris and Lesya. They are both rescues from Kherson. We got Boris first and then found his actual mom and adopted her a few months later. I absolutely love it here and plan on staying here long term. I love my current school and my students as well. Some silly things now🤣 my favorite things. Color? Purple. Food? Still NY pizza🤷🏼‍♀️🤣 number? 7. Season? Fall (my birthday🎉). My favorite place in the entire world? Maiden. I look forward to getting to know each of you and please ask whatever questions you want! I am always willing to answer. I am looking forward to a great month with all of you! See ya soon!

As a sidebar, the full name for frites (картопля фрі) is Vlaamse Frites, which is in Belgium. British & Irish people call them "chips" and Americans call them "French Fries" even though they're not French. But in Kyiv I found Kartofan, outside a metro station, and they're called Belgian Potatoes. The most important thing was that they were tasty !

We'll close today with the modern language map of the Low Countries, in which a language or dialect of Dutch is spoken, or at least understood.

Let's start with a very romantic map made in 1647 of the "Low Countries". I love this map, as a cat lover. My country has the shape of a lion! The map also points out distinctive ethnolinguistic features, valid today! Note that the map combines today's Netherlands, Belgian, and Luxembourg (and bits of Germany & France), and is named, "Belgian Lion".

As a teaser, this week I'll be posting on why we have so many languages in Netherlands: Fun facts: 1. Dutch is the only official language. That means, when you communicate with the national government, it's in Dutch. New citizens must learn Dutch as part of the naturalisation process. To get a Dutch passport, learn Dutch, respect our laws, no bicycle needed (but it's nice if you do get a bicycle). 2. People also speak Dutch in parts of Belgium. Dutch is widely understood in Luxembourg and parts of Northwest Germany. 3. Most of us know English (like you). We like English. It's the world language, and with trade and exploration in our bones, you just know it. 4. Frisian, spoken in the province, Fryslân, is a local official language, taught in schools and you can speak Frisian with local government. 4a. (Frisian is very close to English. You may find it easy.) 5. How did this crazy language situation happen? Where are we going? Will the whole world speak English soon?

But sometimes, I just want to find a quiet place, to simply be; to read, perchance to nap. (this is my own bicycle)

Dutch people live in small houses, ride on crowded trains, and generally jostle against one another. Netherlands has the sixteenth-highest population density in the world. Navigating complicated traffic situations, calmly and systematically, comes naturally to us. But we also care about becoming energy-independent. Here's a picture of a common intersection in a residential neighbourhood. You see that cyclists have the right-of-way over cars, and that has worked out well for us.

In Delft there's a gigantic roundabout, the Delflandplein, that capably handles bicycles, cars, express buses, and the tram to The Hague. It’s a masterpiece of urban design. Even though thousands of cars and bikes pass through the roundabout every day, there were zero crashes reported there over many years.

20
There's many different ways to bring it all together in an intersection: pedestrians, bicycles, cars, trucks, trams and buses. Sometimes the solution is to route the bicycle paths under the cars & trucks..

We have many streets in which cars or emergency vehicles may only use as "guests".

The most important places in a city centre is not accessible for cars... at all. It is safe for children. Notice that we usually don't even bother with helmets.

23
So let's get started with this week's theme: Bicycles! In Netherlands we have 100% separation of bicycles and cars, for safety, and because we have so many people sharing small spaces. How is separation even possible? Let's have a look.

Usually we add blackcurrants (Чорна смородина) for extra taste. And there are other fillings that people like. Originally, olieballen were made as part of a government programme to help feed the poor in cities. But eventually, we found solutions to our social problems, and olieballen became a favourite for all Dutch people, especially around Christmas. Olieballen help us remember our past: what we did right, and what we did wrong.

26
Olieballen. Literally, "oil balls". which sounds cringe, but that's how they're made: dough deep-fried, and served with a bit of powdered sugar, as in the picture.

Speklapjes, or Bacon Steaks, are taken from the back and belly of the pig. You can fry the meat for a long time, making it fatty and crispy. Or you can slice the meat thinly and fry it briefly, perfect with an egg for breakfast.

Most often, we buy them on the street, where they're made fresh, and served in a paper cone, with mayonnaise. One can eat and walk, or just sit somewhere and watch the world go by.

I received a question, "What are the 3 most popular dishes in Netherlands?" I'll start with one of the most popular dishes in the world, "chips". Or "frietjes" as we call them in Dutch.

The choices of fish are many, and never boring. And you can find a place to eat fish anywhere, even on the beach. In this picture is my favourite place to go with my bicycle.

Do you remember what I said last week about having so many people in a tiny wet country? Yes, it's a challenge to feed everybody! So careful conservation and management of fishing on the North Sea is necessary, or we go back to eating potatoes.

My other favourite is New Herring (новий оселедець) which are caught in the North Sea, and then cured with salt (not cooked) on the voyage home. And we eat it immediately... just like in the pictures.
