The choices of fish are many, and never boring. And you can find a place to eat fish anywhere, even on the beach. In this picture is my favourite place to go with my bicycle.

Do you remember what I said last week about having so many people in a tiny wet country? Yes, it's a challenge to feed everybody! So careful conservation and management of fishing on the North Sea is necessary, or we go back to eating potatoes.

My other favourite is New Herring (новий оселедець) which are caught in the North Sea, and then cured with salt (not cooked) on the voyage home. And we eat it immediately... just like in the pictures.

This painting is called "The Potato Eaters" (de aardappeleter), by Vincent van Gogh. If it's not fish, Dutch food can be pretty boring: potatoes, bread, and more potatoes. Vincent decided to go to France, where he painted many of the great paintings that we'll talk about another week.

My dinner today was fried fish pieces, which we call "kibbeling". It's one of our tastiest meals, in my opinion!

The Hague is the seat of our government, and also an international city. However, this is one place where the fishing boats come in, and business people gather at the fish auctions. Fish is our best food, and so I'll tell you about fish today.
