GPE statement We welcome the concern of @SecBlinken over the situation in Amhara and Oromia regions (where #WarOnAmhara and #AmharaGenocide are taking place respectively). However, we are deeply concerned about the ongoing and systematic campaign of violence against Amhara civilians, journalists, activists, and leaders that needs to be addressed directly and head on. The United States and generally the international community has the moral obligation to stop #AmharaGenocide and bring justice. The War on Amhara is not just a civil war, it is a genocide campaign. Amharas are being targeted for their ethnicity, and the Ethiopian government is the main perpetrator in the violence. In recent months, there has been a surge in attacks on Amharas in the Amhara and Oromia regions. Hundreds of thousands of Amharas have been killed, and millions have been displaced. Amhara villages have been burned to the ground, and Amhara businesses have been looted. Amhara journalists, activists, and leaders have been getting targeted. They are being imprisoned, harassed, and murdered for speaking out against #AmharaGenocide. The United States must do more to address the War on Amhara. We urge the US government to: 📍Publicly condemn the genocide against Amharas. 📍 Impose targeted sanctions on Ethiopian government officials responsible for the genocide. 📍 Establish a humanitarian corridor to allow for aiding and protection of Amharas in the affected areas in Oromia and Benshangul Gumuz Regions. 📍 Work with the affected Amhara community and the international community to establish a transitional justice process to address the root causes of the conflict and hold perpetrators of human rights abuses accountable. We also urge the US government to pressure the Ethiopian government to release all imprisoned Amhara journalists, activists, and leaders. #FreeAmharaDetainees.
