A man was charged with assault on June 4 after he allegedly attacked a male stranger who was wearing a cap with an Israeli emblem.
Muhammad Asyraf Said, 30, who is a Singaporean, is accused of committing the offence against Alan Sim, 55, at a bus stop in Rivervale Drive in Sengkang on Oct 27, 2025.
Preliminary investigations revealed that Asyraf had allegedly snatched the cap the latter was wearing and assaulted him. Court documents stated that Asyraf allegedly punched and kicked Sim, who suffered injuries including abrasions on his face and forearm. The older man later sought medical attention for his injuries.
In a statement on June 3, the police said that Sim had been given a stern warning in lieu of prosecution after he displayed a foreign national emblem in a public area – an offence under the Foreign National Emblems (Control of Display) Act.
A police spokesperson added: “(We take) a serious view of any act of violence. Members of the public are advised against the public display and wearing of articles associated with foreign conflicts. “They are also reminded not to import overseas conflicts into Singapore, and to express their views in a lawful and responsible manner.”
In 2023, the Ministry of Home Affairs warned that publicly displaying or wearing foreign national emblems, including flags and banners of any state or relating to the Israel-Hamas war, without a permit is an offence.
Those who break the law can be jailed for up to six months and fined up to $500. In 2023, the Ministry of Manpower (MOM) had urged foreigners to avoid using Singapore as a platform to further political causes amid the Middle East conflict.
“Given the heightened tensions, it is important that we remain calm and not let these external events affect the racial and religious harmony and peace in Singapore,” an advisory by the MOM had said then.
Asyraf’s case has been adjourned to June 18.
For assault, an offender can be jailed for up to three years, fined up to $5,000 or both.

| 15 | UPDATE : Singaporean influencer Eunice Joy Ng was fined S$3,500 (US$2,740) on Friday (May 29) after posting an advertisement for vaporisers in December last year.
Ng, 26, pleaded guilty to one count of publishing an advertisement containing a suggestion to purchase imitation tobacco products on her Telegram story, a contravention under the Tobacco (Control of Advertisements and Sale) Act 1993.
The Act has since been renamed the Tobacco and Vaporisers Control Act 1993 to reflect sharper focus on vapes, and the new Act came into effect on May 1.
Ng, who attended court without a lawyer, said she would pay the fine. She is known online as "Mermaid Girl", but appears to have removed her social media accounts.
A Health Sciences Authority (HSA) prosecuting counsel told the court that Ng decided to buy vapes for resale to supplement her income around November 2025.
She bought five vapes from a Telegram seller at S$13 (US$10) each. She then advertised the sale of the devices on Telegram stories and admitted to selling two at S$15 each.
She posted the advertisements on her Telegram account to generate interest in her business, and continued doing so until around December 2025.
The advertisement was accompanied by the caption: “For those who want me to get vape for them, you can send me your preorder list, and I will try to get them. If there is high demand, I will set up a Google form.”
HSA prosecuting counsel Nur Afiqah sought a fine of S$4,000.
However, Ng told the court that the amount was "a bit high for me" because it was her first time being charged with such an offence.
She added that she did not understand the rationale for the amount and hoped to receive a lighter sentence.
In reply, Ms Afiqah said the amount was warranted, especially given the enforcement climate and public health concerns surrounding the proliferation of vapes. She added that deterrence is necessary to discourage such conduct.
District Judge Terence Tay noted that in past cases cited by the prosecution, the offenders had charges that were taken into consideration, whereas Ng faced only a single charge. He asked Ms Afiqah whether the prosecution's sentencing position had taken that into account.
Ms Afiqah acknowledged that while the past cases involved more charges, greater emphasis should now be placed on deterrence given the current climate, to which Judge Tay said "very well".
In sentencing, Judge Tay said that while there are serious public health concerns surrounding e-vaporisers, which necessitate deterrence, the sentence imposed must not be excessive.
He imposed a fine of S$3,500 on Ng. She would have had to serve 10 days' jail in default if she could not pay the fine.
For advertising vapes for sale, an offender can be fined up to $10,000, jailed for up to six months, or both, under the Tobacco (Control of Advertisements and Sale) Act 1993. | 26 342 |

| 20 | Woman Praised After Confronting Group Over Littering at Little India Park
A woman has received praise online after confronting a group of men for allegedly leaving litter behind at a park in Little India.
The incident, which was caught on video, was shared on Facebook on May 27 and quickly drew attention from netizens who applauded the woman for speaking up.
In the footage, the woman is seen telling the group to clean up the mess instead of leaving rubbish scattered around the park. Most of the men appeared willing to cooperate and offered to throw away the litter.
However, one man, who was allegedly intoxicated, reportedly became confrontational during the exchange. Despite the tense situation, the woman continued standing her ground and questioned the group over their behaviour.
The resident later claimed that littering and public urination have been ongoing issues in the area for a long time, causing frustration among people living nearby.
Many online users praised the woman for taking action and defending the cleanliness of the neighbourhood, with some calling for stricter enforcement against irresponsible behaviour in public spaces. | 27 904 |
