| 14 | If we take folkloristic literature, folk tales and folk legends as a basis, the suspicion certainly arises that in pre-modern times everyone was capable to a certain extent of seeing the otherworldly reality and communicating with the Vรฆttir. And indeed, ancient sources and Old Norse histories prove that the art of seership was not only practiced by religious specialists, but also by the so-called common people. In the far north, fortune-tellers and clairvoyants were also known as spรกmadr (โscrying manโ) or spรกkona (โscrying womanโ) or vรถlva (โwand-bearerโ). The magic wand of the seers was also called Gandr in the far north, which can be translated as โmagic wandโ, but originally probably referred to the (helping) spirit. According to this, the magic wand was in a sense a spirit being itself and a kind of shamanic helping spirit of the clairvoyants and fortune-tellers (Old Norse gandar).

The Vรฆttir are also known as the "invisible" and "hidden" ones. Despite this, myths and legends, historical accounts and academic treatises tell of their nature and work, describe their form and tell their story. Apparently, the spirits do show themselves in time, become visible or reveal themselves, at least to those who look (germ. (s)keu: "to pay attention to something"). "Landvรฆttir were invisible to most people, but could be perceived by รณfreskir menn, people who had second sight (Reallexikon der germanischen Altertumskunde)." The Old Norse word รfreskr. The Old Norse word รfreskr means "clairvoyant" (รณfreski: "clairvoyant") or "clairvoyant" (รณfresk kona). Surprisingly, it seems that quite a few people had this gift.
