Age Is Not Just a Number for U.S. Voters As millions of voters head to the polls in 15 states on Super Tuesday, everything looks set for a White House rematch between President Joe Biden and former President Donald J. Trump. With Biden turning 82 two week’s after the presidential election in November and Trump turning 78 this summer, the two would be the oldest presidential nominees in history. If re-elected Biden would extend his own record as the oldest sitting president, while Trump would surpass Ronald Reagan, who was 77 at the end of his presidency, as the second oldest man to hold the highest office in the United States. Considering these numbers, it’s no surprise that voters have questions about the age and fitness of both candidates, with President Biden’s age and state of health a particular point of concern, even among democratic voters. Those concerns were amplified last month, when the special counsel investigating President Biden’s handling of classified documents from his time as vice president described him as a “sympathetic, well-meaning, elderly man with a poor memory” in his report. A new poll by The New York Times and Siena College reveals how big the concerns about Biden’s age really are, showing that 73 percent of registered voters believe that he is “just too old to be an effective president”, compared to 42 percent who think the same about Donald Trump. Even more strikingly, 61 percent of those who voted for Biden in 2020 believe he is too old now, along with 56 percent of those who identified as supporters of the Democratic Party. That doesn’t necessarily mean people won’t vote for him though, as even 59 percent of those who would vote for Biden tend to agree that he is too old to be an effective president, but they have similar concerns about Trump. Mixed Thoughts on Chances of a New Pandemic Exactly four years ago today, the World Health Organization declared Covid-19 a pandemic. Over 7 million people are reported to have died from the disease as of February 25, 2024, according to the organization’s official figures. However, reported figures are usually an underestimate, meaning that the death toll is likely even higher, especially when taking into account factors such as deaths not attributed to Covid if the person did not test and deaths caused indirectly by overwhelmed health systems. The following chart looks at public perceptions on the chances of a new pandemic emerging as a result of a new virus. Taken by Ipsos between October 30 and November 3, the survey revealed that respondents living in Malaysia, Turkey and Indonesia were among those particularly likely to say that there will be another global pandemic. By contrast, respondents in several European countries were less likely to agree with the statement, with only around four in ten in Germany, France and the UK saying it was likely. Across the 34 countries polled, an average of 48 percent said that they expected there to be another global pandemic. In order to improve levels of preparedness, governments and scientific bodies around the world are now expanding areas of research into a wider range of viral families, with the understanding that while it’s known another disease is likely to emerge, it’s unknown what that disease will look like. Scientists call this anticipated hypothetical disease, 'Disease X' - a term coined by the WHO in 2018 to describe an unknown pathogen that could emerge with an epidemic or pandemic potential. The Countries That Are Safe & Unsafe for Women Eight men were arrested in India's Northeastern Jharkhand state for allegedly raping a foreign tourist while holding her and her husband at knifepoint. The case has been tied to a video by a Spanish-Brazilian travel blogger couple identifying themselves as the victims in the attack. The pair had been traveling overland by motorcycle and had been camping. The case has caused an outcry internationally and in India, where outrage over rampant sexual violence against women has hit headlines repeatedly, catalyzed by several high-profile rape cases, like those of a 22-year-old intern in Delhi in 2012, a 71-year-old Catholic nun in West Bengal in 2015 or a 26-year-old veterinarian near Hyderabad in 2019. Two of these three women were killed. According to the Georgetown Institute 2023 Women Peace and Security Index, India scored 0.595 out of 1 points, placing it in rank 128 among 177 countries rated in the index. The report attested an especially high amount of political violence aimed at women, counting the seven-most incidents of all countries. India also fared poorly due to the rate of boys to girls being born with the sixth-worst score in the ranking. The nation was among the most improved in women's financial participation, while scoring much lower education, employment and parliamentary representation. The index employs a broad view of women's security, not only analyzing the incidence of violence against women and prevalence of discrimination, but also women's independence, taking the view that women who are educated, employed and autonomous are much safer from violence. Asia and Africa were identified as the least safe places for women by the index. In Latin America, Mexico, Colombia, Guatemala and El Salvador stuck out as places that are especially dangerous. In Europe, Southeastern Europe and Italy fared worse than the rest of the continent. Source: Statista

Black women four times as likely to die in pregnancy The 2023 report published by MBRRACE, the collaboration appointed by the Healthcare Quality Improvement Partnership to run the national Maternal, Newborn and Infant clinical Outcome Review Programme in the UK, highlights a gruesome truth in terms of maternal mortality (death of the mother during or up to six weeks after pregnancy). Between the years 2019 and 2021, data collected by MBRRACE showed that women from Black ethnic backgrounds were almost four times as likely to die during or up to six weeks after pregnancy than White women ; for Asian women, the rate of maternal mortality was almost twice as high as for White women. MBRRACE also found that women living in deprived areas, no matter their ethnic background, were twice as likely to die during or directly after pregnancy than women from affluent areas. 12 % of the women who died during or up to a year after pregnancy over the period covered by the report were at multiple severe disavantages, including mental health issues, domestic abuse or substance use, and maternal healthcare staff were often expected to care for women with those disadvantages without proper training. Mental health-related causes also accounted for almost 40 % of the deaths occurring six weeks to a year after the end of pregnancy. Among the highest causes of maternal deaths between 2019 and 2021, Covid-19 accounted for 14 % of all fatalities during or up to six weeks after the end of pregnancy, with the report noting that confused messaging and vaccine hesitancy may have played a part. China Steps Up Military Spending According to SIPRI data, China has increased its military expenditure by almost 900 percent since 1992. At around $300 billion in 2022, the Chinese spent significantly more than the Russians (around $72 billion), but their spending was still well below that of the U.S. (around $812 billion). China is the second-biggest spender in total military budget after the United States. Still, the Chinese spending spree has raised eyebrows worldwide. It came back into the spotlight last week when the reference to a "peaceful reunification" with Taiwan was dropped from a government report presented at the Chinese National People's Congress. At the same event, it was announced that the Chinese defense budget was to grow another 7.2 percent in 2024. The South China Morning Post out of Hong Kong reports that the Chinese military budget has pivoted towards combat readiness and preparation for war. Part of the increased Chinese military investment is going towards more "advanced technology, science, logistics and key weaponry and equipment", the newspaper reports. Source: Statista

A Matter of Faith For many people around the world, religion plays a prominent role in their everyday lives, while others embrace secular ideas. According to a Statista Consumer Insights survey, carried out between April 2022 and March 2023, many of the most religious countries in the world can be found in Africa and the Middle East. Yet, for the countries included in the survey, Asian nations Pakistan and Indonesia together with Egypt scored highest with 99 percent of all adults in the surveyed age group professing to a religion. The most secular country in the survey was China, with only 22 percent of the adult population saying that they followed a religion. The number is not surprising given the fact that religious faith was marginalized under Communism in the country. Other relatively secular places in Asia included Vietnam, Japan, South Korea and Hong Kong. In Europe, the Czech Republic (27 percent follow a religion) is the country with the fewest people who declare themselves believers – a fact that is in part also tied to the country’s communist past. Further East in Europe, religion has not been stifled as much despite a socialist past – for example in Romania, Serbia or Lithuania and also in Russia. Poland, the home of famous pope John Paul II, also showed more religious tendencies than many of its Western European neighbors. In the West of the continent, Ireland was the most religious, while in Southern Europe, religion was most widespread in Greece, Italy and Portugal. Peru was the only country surveyed on the American continent with more than 80 percent saying they followed a religion. Most other countries here – with the exception of Canada – did nevertheless score consistently high on religious faith with little difference between North and South. Source: Statista

The Cost of Blocking the Internet By first throttling and then blocking access to social media sites and news outlets in the aftermath of its invasion of Ukraine, Russia has caused the most expensive internet blockages of 2022 and 2023. This is according to tech company Top10VPN. The service puts the economic cost in the past year at $4 billion while they had cost more than $21 billion in the country between the invasion of Ukraine in February 2022 and the end of that year. Since the blockages are country-wide, the large number of 113 million people affected causes the high price tag. The estimated cost of restricting the internet puts Russia ahead of second-ranked Ethiopia, where last year religious tensions around practicing in local languages led to internet shutdowns aimed at the country's Orthodox church as the government came out in support of the new splinter synod. Almost 30 million people were affected by this at an economic cost of $1.6 billion. Myanmar comes third because of internet shutdowns suppressing dissent regionally in the Chin, Kachin, Kayah, Magway and Mandalay states as well as restricting access to social network X (formerly Twitter) since the country's last coup in 2021. Economic costs for this reached almost $1 billion last year. Myanmar is also the country which shut down the internet for the longest time in 2023: Almost 19,000 hours. However, the long-term targeted blocks only affected around 24 million people. Putting together hours of blocks and shutdowns and people affected, India restricted the internet most last year at more than 470 billion user hours (59 million people affected for almost 8,000 hours), when the government used outages to quell civil unrest locally, mainly in Manipur state. Inflation Progress Stalls as Housing Costs Continue to Rise Inflation in the U.S. edged up slightly in February, as rising housing costs continued to put upward pressure on the Consumer Price Index, while an increase in energy prices compared to January also contributed to higher-than-expected overall inflation. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, the Consumer Price Index for All Urban Consumers (CPI-U) increased 3.2 percent over the last 12 months before seasonal adjustment, up from 3.1 percent in January, which was what economists had expected for February as well. On a monthly basis, prices edged up 0.4 percent with the indexes for shelter and gasoline alone accounting for more than 60 percent of the overall increase. Meanwhile core inflation, which excludes volatile food and energy prices, came in at 3.8 percent in February, down slightly from 3.9 percent in January and the slowest increase since April 2021. Due to its weight in the Consumer Price Index, the cost of shelter continues to be a major driver of inflation. Rents and owners' equivalent rents of residences increased 5.8 and 6.0 percent year-over-year in February, respectively, as the index for shelter climbed for the 46th consecutive month. In fact, excluding the impact of shelter, inflation would have stood at 1.8 percent last month, below the Fed's target level of 2 percent. Source: Statista

The Gender Pay Gap Visualized Women in the U.S. had to work all the way through 2022 and into March of 2023 to earn the equivalent of the 2022 wages of U.S. men. When looking only at full-time, year-round work, this means that on average, American working women are paid 84 cents for every dollar that working men make. March 12 marks Equal Pay Day in the United States. But the day is only the first in a row of equal pay days for different races and ethnicities published by AAUW, also including Asian, Pacific Islander & Native Hawaiian women's equal pay day on April 3, 2023, Black Women's equal pay day on July 9, Latina's equal pay day on October 3 and Native American Women's equal pay day on November 21 of 2023. Black women working full-time, year-round earn 69 cents for every dollar white, non-Hispanic men make, while that number is 66 cents for Pacific Islander & Native Hawaiian women, 59 cents for Native American women and only 57 cents for Latina women in the United States. As Native American women work part-time or seasonally more often, their equal pay day comes even later than that of Latinas, however. Asian-American women outearn the average woman in the U.S. and they currently earn 99 cents for every dollar white, non-Hispanic men make when looking at full-time, year-round work only. The money females in the U.S. earn compared to men has been increasing slowly in recent years, especially for Asian women. However, at a rate of one or two cent of increase per year, women would still wait decades in many instances for pay parity in full-time work. Source: Statista

The World’s Biggest Arms Importers ndia was the biggest importer of major arms between 2019-23, with a global share of 9.8 percent, based on the size and value of the transfer rather than the purchasing price. This is according to data from the Stockholm International Peace Research Institute. It was followed by Saudi Arabia (8.4 percent), Qatar (7.6 percent), Ukraine (4.9 percent) and Pakistan (4.3 percent). These five countries accounted for 37 percent of all arms imports over the five year average. India’s arms imports increased by 4.7 percent between 2014-18 and 2019-23. According to SIPRI, the country’s imports are largely due to its ongoing tensions with Pakistan and China. Although Russia remained India’s leading supplier, the share of imports from its trade partner dropped from 76 percent in 2009-13 to 36 percent in 2019-23. India has been buying more weapons from Western suppliers such as France and the United States, in addition to increasing its domestic production. Regionally, Africa (-52 percent), the Americas (-7.2 percent), Asia and Oceania (-12 percent) and the Middle East (-12 percent) all saw a decrease in imports of major arms from 2014-2018 to 2019-2023. Only Europe bucked this trend, with a 94 percent increase in the flow of arms to the continent. Nearly a quarter (23 percent) of Europe’s arms imports in 2019-23 were in Ukraine, which received transfers of major arms from over 30 states in 2022-23, following Russia’s invasion which started in February 2022. Russia, on the other hand, relies largely on its own industry for major arms, although in 2022-23 it received flying bombs from Iran and ballistic missiles from North Korea, according to the report. Even though Europe has seen the biggest proportional increase, states in Asia and Oceania and the Middle East have continued to import arms in much greater volumes. Source: Statista

The World's Biggest Arms Exporters According to the Stockholm International Peace Research Institute, the United States remains the world's largest arms exporter responsible for 41.7 percent of international arms sales between 2019 and 2023, up from 38.6 percent between 2017 and 2021. During the most recent time span, the country supplied arms to more than 100 countries. France moved up to second position, overtaking Russia, whose share in exports has been decreasing recently. Between 2019 and 20213, France was responsible for 10.9 percent of global arms exports (slightly up from 10.7). Russia came just behind at 10.5 percent calculated as the average from prewar years 2019-2021 and those after its invasion of Ukraine from 2022 to 2023. In the five years before the invasion, Russia's share in global arms export had stood at a much higher 18.6 percent. Russia's and France's biggest customer is India, which is the biggest importer of weapons in the world overall. France shipped arms to 64 states in the given time period and exports of its Rafales combat aircraft rose to almost one third of these exports. Russia's exported arms to 41 countries. Both countries as well as the U.S. ship the majority of their weapons to Asia and the Middle East, with big customers also including China, Saudi Arabia and Qatar. U.S. supply of weapons to Ukraine has played a big role recently, with Germany and Poland coming out as the top 2 and top 3 suppliers between 2019 and 2023. One of Russia's main customer is Egypt, while France also supplied more than 9 percent of South Korea's imports in the given time frame. With Russia scaling back exports, the relative importance of other players in the global market - including China, Germany, Italy and the United Kingdom - grew slightly. Spain overtook Israel and South Korea once more in rank 8 of the list of the world's largest arms exporters after the latter country briefly seen exports spike. Source: Statista

How Well Do Americans Know the Internet? The rapid pace of technological development in fields like so-called artificial intelligence, cybercrime and data protection — or the lack thereof — can overwhelm more casual observers. Still, our increasingly digital lifestyles require a basic understanding of various concepts if harm is to be successfully prevented. As our chart based on a 2023 survey by the Pew Research Center shows, many U.S. residents lack this basic understanding of more recent phenomena. For example, 42 percent of respondents to the survey, which was conducted in May 2023 among more than 5,000 U.S. adults and utilized a random sample weighted against the United States average in terms of age, gender, voter registration and other indicators, know for certain what a deepfake is, a "seemingly real, computer-generated image, video or audio of something that did not occur". 32 percent answered correctly how a large language model like OpenAI's GPT-4 works, which in this case was "create a response based on word patterns and relationships it previously learned from text pulled from the internet". An even lower percentage of respondents know that there is no national law regulating data protection in the United States and offered the correct answer to the age below which data from children can't be collected without parental consent, which is 13. When it comes to digital literacy, apart from knowing which tech entrepreneur owns which company, to what Facebook changed its name and which password out of four examples provided is the most secure, there's one other aspect which a majority of survey participants got right: how cookies are used by websites and social media platforms. Where Trust In The News Is Highest & Lowest Each year, the Reuters Institute for the Study of Journalism publishes a report on digital news consumption. The latest edition, based on surveys of more than 93,000 people in 46 countries, documents how overall trust in news has slid downwards by two percentage points in the past year. About four in ten people in the total sample say they trust most news most of the time. Among the countries surveyed, Finland remains the country with the highest level of trust (69 percent), while Greece (19 percent) has the lowest. The share of citizens in all countries surveyed who are “very” or “extremely” interested in news and consume it regularly fell from 51 percent in 2022 to 48 percent in 2023. Many people are choosing to increasingly ration or limit their exposure to news, or at least to news of a certain kind. News that is overly repetitive or deemed "emotionally draining" is often passed over in favor of something more uplifting. According to the report, with the abundance of channels now available, "it is not surprising that news consumers are increasingly feeling overwhelmed and confused, and many are turning away temporarily or permanently. Selective news avoidance and news fatigue have been exacerbated by the challenging times we live in." As the study reveals, social networks that rely more on videos such as TikTok, Instagram or YouTube are becoming increasingly important for news. In this respect the writers add: "it is clear that most consumers are not looking for more news, but for the news that seems most relevant to them and helps them make sense of the complex issues we face. The new technological disruption of artificial intelligence is just around the corner, threatening to unleash a new wave of personalized, but potentially unreliable, content." Source: Statista

How Dangerous are Deepfakes and Other AI-Powered Fraud? Former U.S. president Donald Trump posing with Black voters, President Joe Biden discouraging people from voting via telephone or the Pope in a puffy white jacket: Deepfakes of videos, photos and audio recordings have become widespread on various internet platforms, aided by the technological advances of large language models like Midjourney, Google's Gemini or OpenAI's ChatGPT. With the right prompt fine-tuning, everyone can create seemingly real images or make the voices of prominent political or economic figures and entertainers say anything they want. While creating a deepfake is not a criminal offense on its own, many governments are nevertheless moving towards stronger regulation when using artificial intelligence to prevent harm to the parties involved. Apart from the main avenue of deepfakes, creating non-consensual pornographic content involving mostly female celebrities, this technology can also be used to commit identity fraud by manufacturing fake IDs or impersonating others over the phone. As our chart based on the most recent annual report of identity verification provider Sumsub shows, deepfake-related identity fraud cases have skyrocketed between 2022 and 2023 in many countries around the world. For example, the number of fraud attempts in the Philippines rose by 4,500 percent year over year, followed by nations like Vietnam, the United States and Belgium. With the capabilities of so-called artificial intelligence potentially increasing even further, as is evidenced by products like AI video generator Sora, deepfake fraud attempts could also spill over into other areas. "We’ve seen deepfakes become more and more convincing in recent years and this will only continue and branch out into new types of fraud, as seen with voice deepfakes", says Pavel Goldman-Kalaydin, Sumsub's Head of Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning, in the aforementioned report. Women CEOs vs. James and John The New York Times did a story back in 2015 on how there were fewer women CEO’s running major U.S. companies than CEOs with the first name John. Fast forward to now and U.S. financial group Bloomberg decided to revisit the topic, this time using an analysis of the share of women CEOs of S&P 500 companies versus those with the name John or a derivative, like Jon. Analysts found that women overtook the number of CEOs with any single male name for the first time in 2018. As this chart shows, there’s still some way to go though, as the number of women CEOs only matched up to the number of CEOs named either James and John for the first time last year. The following chart is based on Bloomberg’s analysis, which is supported by a similar study run by Lauren Harris, a Stanford University economics doctoral student.
