The parties agreed to further enhance both bilateral relations, which started to improve last year due to the pro-Japanese stance of the South Korean president, and trilateral ties with Washington. Enhancing relations can take various forms, including frequent joint exercises. Lately, the number of trilateral and bilateral trainings has significantly increased in the region, a result of the improved relations between the countries. Incidentally, the call took place amidst the recent parliamentary elections in South Korea - in which Yoon Sok-yeol’s party lost to the opposition, who managed to secure the majority of seats in the legislature. This outcome reflects public opinion on the current government, particularly regarding the need for changes in domestic policy. The external defeat of the ruling party in the elections may only have a partial impact, as the president, despite having a minority in parliament, still retains a certain level of freedom in international affairs. So far, all signs suggest that Yoon will continue to strengthen relations with Japan, setting aside issues from the colonial past, as the normalization of ties stands as his significant diplomatic achievement. Both Tokyo and Washington welcome these intentions, as they lay the foundation for forming a coalition aimed at countering the DPRK.
