After the Civil War there was still a very big sense of anti-unionism, many former confederate soldiers felt disillusioned with the reconstruction authority in the South. Many wanted to go back to their life before the war, but for some their families were gone, and their belongings ransacked. I miss when South Carolina didn't have homosexuals for their Senators. Above is a photo of Governor Strom Thurmond and his newly wed wife Jean Crouch during their wedding in 1947. Notice Strom's Southern suit. He would go on to be the Dixiecrat candidate for President a year later.

Photo of a segregationist Southern lady with her baby wrapped in the Confederate flag with the word "FUTURE" painted on his carriage. I'd argue this is one of the best representation of the movement. It was based on protecting their future generations from being swarmed by aggressive hostile "cracker-hating" blacks. They wanted their own institutions which were handed down by their fathers and grandfathers.
