It's 150 kilometres from St. Petersburg Ivangorod was founded by Ivan III in 1492. The fortress was built 100 metres from the Teutonic castle. Its main function at that time was to protect the Novgorod land from invasions from western neighbours. When building the fortress, the architects took advantage of the geological peculiarity: the walls were erected on a ledge of the Baltic-Ladoga glint, which made its assault unpromising. Ivangorod is the westernmost point of the Leningrad region and one of the most unusual towns in the region. It is located on the border with Estonia, standing on the right bank of the Narva River.
