During the 9th century, the strength of the Islamic world under the Abbasids Caliphs was on the rise and the war between the Arabs and the Romans -under the Amorian dynasty- had reached a high peek. After the passing of emperor Theophilos (842), it was his spouse and empress Theodora that assumed the imperial office of Constantinople on behalf of her underage son. This Theodora is more famous to history readers due to her being the sovereign that officially ended the crisis of iconoclasm in the empire and restored the icons throughout the Christian East. The Caliphate regarded the assumption of power by a woman as a sign of weekness and as a fair chance for the Arabs to expand at the expense of Byzantium. The main enemies of Theodora were: the Caliphs of Egypt, the Emirate of Melitene in Eastern Asia Minor, the Muslim-Governer of Tarsus in Cilicia and a group of heretics known as Paulicians. Theodora was able to rise at the occasion, to defend her country and even to take the military initiative and strike back against her foes.
