Spring festivals in Central and Eastern Europe

Spring is a big deal in countries that were once pagan and also have a long, dark winter. Here's a look at spring festivals in Central and Eastern Europe!

“Away from his arms in the open field A man should fare not a foot; For never he knows when the need for a spear Shall arise on the distant road.” ~Hávamál 38, Bellows “Vápnum sínum skal-a maðr velli á feti ganga framar, því at óvíst er at vita, nær verðr á vegum úti geirs of þörf guma.” Painting: Viking Battle, by Alexander Groznov.

Just some thoughts regarding our old Folk Faiths, or "Paganism" as we often call it. Personally as I've said more recently I'm not sure where I fall or if I'd even call myself a "pagan". I've expressed this stance as a result of other people's opinions and most especially, "scholar" opinions of what Paganism is. Their stance being that in ways it is as rigid and dogmatic in the same way abrahamism is. That traditions and rituals have set rules, and times, and things like kneeling and praying, etc, etc. I have no doubt that some of the ancients were particular in what they followed or chose to do, but I don't see that any of it relates to any of us now. We didn't live then and we have no idea why they chose to do what they may have done. Do you want to know what a ritual really is? I'll tell you then. My dog became very sick a month ago and I had to make the decision to put her down. It was very unexpected and heartbreaking. Since she has left this realm I still walk every morning in the same way I did with her. I still go to the park every day after work the same way we did. I still talk to her. I still go to the farm store just to stroll through, the same way she loved to. These are my rituals to her. The specifics of what I do don't matter. One day I may go to the woods that we walked, instead of going to the park. The point is the ritual doesn't matter, what matters is my love and memory of her. I have friends who loved her dearly and if they chose to do something to honor her it wouldn't matter to me what they did. That would be up to them, as that has to do with their relationship with her. This is how ritual works now, and how it has always worked. Don't let anyone tell you otherwise. There are no "rules". Only people who want to gain some sort of control claim this.
