​​Putin orders Russian government to create crypto regulation by July 2019 It is being  reported  by Cointelegraph that Russian President Vladimir Putin recently issued a deadline for the government to adopt regulations concerning digital assets. This isn't the first time the Russian government has tried to define regulations for crypto, but this time it may stick. The document calls for a deadline of enforcement on digital asset regulations by July 1st, 2019. Putin has ordered the Council of the Federation of Russia and the Russian State Duma to form and adopt the regulations during their spring session. The Duma has announced it will be reviewing such regulations in March. In the call to action, Putin lays out the need to define federal regulation that will aid in the development of a digital economy and provide a framework for oversight of digital settlements. This comes in as reminiscent of last year when Putin also ordered regulatiions on cryptocurrencies to be in place by summer, and in fact legislation was initially passed in May of 2018, however due to some terminology changes the biill was sent back to the reading phase at the end of the year. Being the second go at it does give some optimism to the idea that this time regulation may actually be enacted. ​​FTX Exchange Acquires Blockfolio for $150M, Sixth-Largest Crypto Acquisition in History FTX cryptocurrency exchange is now expanding its retail aspirations by acquiring the top crypto app, Blockfolio for $150 million. This deal is the sixth-largest crypto-based acquisition in history, ranking the Tron Foundation’s acquisition of BitTorrent of $125 million.  As the two firms are joining forces, Blockfolio announced that the firms will be launching a retail trading experience later this year, powered by FTX.  Blockfolio originated as a mobile-first crypto portfolio tracker, since its launch in 2014. Blockfolio has integrated with exchanges, and top media companies to deliver a combination of price data, news, and team updates. The firm is based in Los Angeles. Crypto derivatives exchange FTX is based in the Caribbean state of Antigua and Barbuda, and currency ranks first by order-book liquidity and seventh by 24-hour volume. Founded in May 2019, the firm has found its niche in the crypto exchange market by offering crypto derivatives, options, and tokens. They also offer innovative crypto products, including the TRUMP and BIDEN tokens for betting on the upcoming US Presidential election.  FTX is currently catered towards professional traders, offering ERC-20 tokens that track the volatility of Bitcoin, and the ability to trade on futures markets. Blockfolio focuses more on retail customers, as it is a consumer app that has been downloaded over 6 million times on iOS and Android. Blockfolio previously raised $17 million from Founders Fund, Pantera Capital, Dan Matuszewski, DCM Ventures, Hashkey Digital Asset Group, and others.  Currently, FTX has around 30,000 monthly active users on its platform, with average daily volumes in spot and derivatives markets reaching over $1.5 billion per day. The accumulation of FTX’s trading fees would result in roughly over $20 million in monthly revenue. Binance’s acquisition of CoinMarketCap Binance acquired CoinMarketCap earlier this year, another crypto data provider with a large amount of retail traffic, in certain ways similar to the FTX and Blockfolio deal. Binance reportedly paid 400 million for CoinMarketCap, which would probably tie in first place with Circle’s takeover of Poloniex.  With the acquisition of the world’s most-referenced crypto data tracking site, Binance enhances data transparency and credibility to users which we expect huge synergies to be achieved between CoinMarketCap and Binance Info.

​​US Government Offers $5 Million Reward for Arrest of Venezuela’s Head of Petro Cryptocurrency US Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), a division of the Department of Homeland Security, has added Joselit Ramirez to its most wanted person’s list. Ramirez is a public official and currently he is Venezuela’s superintendent of cryptocurrency Petro, the country’s oil-backed cryptocurrency.  Unresolved Case The report shows that Ramirez is wanted by the US government over allegations of corruption, links to the narcotics trade, and other crimes. The ICE accuses him for multiple violations associated with international commerce and his alleged involvement in the international drug trafficking scene. The ICE wants the superintendent for violation of the Kingpin Act, the International Emergency Economic Powers Act, and for breaking multiple sanctions imposed by the US Treasury Department’s Office of Foreign Asset Control (OFAC). Now, the US government is offering a $5 million reward to anyone who can provide information leading to the conviction or arrest of Ramirez. The ICE says that Ramirez has deep economic, social, and political ties to numerous alleged narcotics kingpins. Ramirez is also wanted for sanction evasion and money laundering. The move comes the same day when Venezuela’s government has started accepting the similar sanctioned Petro crypto for gasoline purchases. Last week, Venezuela obtained many shipments of gasoline from Iran, evading sanctions imposed by the US. Ramirez has been serving as the head of Venezuela’s cryptocurrency agency since June 2018. Carlos Vargas was his predecessor, an opposition leader, and a famous congressman who later worked with the Nicolas Maduro administration during the development of the Petro. In March 2020, the district attorney of New York, Geoffrey Barman, accused Ramirez of being part of a corrupt group of high-profile Venezuela officials, including President Nicolas Madura, for running a narco-terrorism partnership that aims to flood the US with cocaine so that to undermine the wellbeing and health of the United States. Venezuela journalist Marbellis posted a photo of Ramirez on twitter in which he seemed to be working from his office and apparently appeared unaffected by the ICE announcement. If Ramirez is arrested, then he will be sent to the United States and tried in the Southern District of New York. Venezuelans to Bypass Hyperinflation with Bitcoin-Backed Synthetic US Dollars After Years of Extreme Economic Crisis Venezuela launched its Petro cryptocurrency backed by mineral reserves and oil in 2018 as the nation was facing harsh sanctions imposed by the US and seeing a plummeting Venezuela currency (Bolivar). The controversial Venezuelan government has even forced its citizens to use Petro. The nation recently announced that all petrol stations across the nation will sell fuel at reduced prices in exchange for Petro cryptocurrency from customers. But the cryptocurrency was not supported or embraced wholeheartedly by the global community. Even local investors are skeptical towards Petro cryptocurrency. However, the Venezuelan government is trying to develop its own mainstream digital currencies to revive its failing economy. ​​South Korea Sets Up Panel to Accelerate CBDC Launch The development of Central Bank Digital Currency (CBDC) remains an interesting topic in the blockchain ecosystem.  While some countries are developing theirs in a bid to gain subsequent control of the cryptocurrency landscape, others are doing so to keep their currencies relevant. Irrespective of the motive, the development of CBDC is an indication of the futuristic importance of digital currencies. In a bid to fast track the launch of its CBDC, South Korea has set up a legal advisory panel to review possible regulatory hurdles surrounding the issuance of a CBDC. The Review Committee The development of a Central Bank Digital Currency is a disruptive initiative that must be well backed by law. The South Korean central bank announced its intention to follow the global trend in the development of a CBDC in April 2020. The bank launched the process by setting up a six-man panel including professors of commercial laws and lawyers focused on Fintech. The committee which also has a staff from the Bank of Korea’s legal policy office will review all potential regulatory issues that might impede the novel project. The committee is billed to start work today, Monday, with a timeline spanning till the end of May 2021. The committee’s work will constitute part of the 22-month project timeline set to launch the CBDC. Probable Impacts of the Proposed CBDC To enact sound monetary policies in countries where cryptocurrencies dominate can either be an effort in futility or yield less optimal results. With a functional CBDC, this can easily be achieved.  In addition, with CBDC, South Korea will have a viable bargaining tool to gain control of her foreign exchange. The adoption of a blockchain-backed CBDC will also help reduce the financial cost of printing money which wears off over time. In all, the blockchain ecosystem will benefit as the hassles associated with Fiat money transactions will be eliminated or limited.

​​New Theory Claims ‘Satoshi Nakamoto’ Helped Run Drugs for Kingpin Pablo Escobar Since the launch of the Bitcoin mainnet back in 2009, the most intriguing aspect of the top cryptocurrency has been its pseudo-anonymous founder, Satoshi Nakamoto. The creator of Bitcoin has remained anonymous even after Bitcoin peaked at its highest back in 2017, which has given rise to speculation, conspiracy theories, and of course, impersonators. Many Bitcoin pundits and crypto veterans have claimed to know the real identity of the Satoshi Nakamoto, but none have yet revealed his true identity. There are several theories behind who could be the actual creator of Bitcoin and people have pinpointed several individuals, but none have been convincingly proven to be the original creator. However, a new theory has hit the market which could link the anonymous Bitcoin creator to one of the most infamous drug lords Pablo Escobar. The theory suggests that one Yasutaka Nakamoto who held a high-ranking engineer post for Pacific West Airlines before going on to work for the notorious drug kingpin Escobar himself. The theory suggests that Yasutaka first disappeared from public life back in 1992 after an assassination attempt, and later emerged towards the second half of the 2000s to create Bitcoin. The theory was put forward by Olof Gustaffson, CEO of Escobar Inc. Apart from running a multinational company associated with the former drug kingpin, Gustaffson also worked as a right-hand man to the brother of Pablo Escobar. When inquiring about the motivation behind this absurd Satoshi Nakamoto theory, he said that he was revealing all this now because of the self-proclaimed Bitcoin creator Craig Wright’s continuous lies and failed attempts to prove he is the original creator of Bitcoin. Gustaffson further claimed that Yasutaka could be a perfect fit for the role of Satoshi Nakamoto since he agreed to help Escobar smuggle drugs through the airline he was working with, but never pledged his loyalty. Gustaffson also claimed that being an engineer, Yasutaka had access to microprocessors and semiconductors which acted as a building block for him and apply his knowledge for the creation of Bitcoin. The Dorian Nakamoto Connection The only publically available profile for Yasutaka Nakamoto that matches Gustaffson’s story is that from a 1992 Los Angeles Times article which talks about the probable Nakamoto working for Hughes Aircraft, managing to escape unscratched from a pipe bomb found in his car and possibly planted on a directive from Escobar. Since that incident, Yasutaka disappeared from the public eye. The probable Satoshi Nakamoto also has a connection with another personality whose face is still used as a representation for Bitcoin creator in numerous articles and publications, Dorian Nakamoto. Dorian Nakamoto was subjected to intense media exposure in 2014 when an article back in 2014 claimed that he could be the actual Bitcoin creator. Dorian denied being involved in the creation of Bitcoin and asked for privacy. However, Gustaffson pointed towards Dorian’s white page entry which mentions his age, area of residence along with six relatives one of whom is Yasutaka A. Nakamoto. Gustaffson claims that the Nakamoto listed by Dorian and the one he has been talking about are the same person and the actual Bitcoin creator the world has been looking for. He commented: “WE BELIEVE HIS MIDDLE NAME IS AKIKO, AND THAT HE LATER WENT BY THE NAME AKIKO. A MAN BY THE NAME AKIKO WAS REGISTERED AT THE ADDRESS OF DORIAN IN CALIFORNIA.” The likelihood deepens when one goes through a US phonebook search for the same name, which lists four of Dorian’s relatives for one Akiko Nakamoto and both Dorian and Yasutaka lived at the same listed address. Gustaffson claimed that Dorian knew about bitcoin all along and has even come to Colombia to do business with Roberto Escobar in 2014. While a majority of conspiracies about Satoshi’s identity looks quite close and this one is no different, but there is no conclusive evidence to verify the claims or negate any doubts.

​​Barstool Sports Founder Dave Portnoy to Dump Bitcoin and Chainlink (LINK) After $25,000 Loss Online sports celebrity and founder of Barstool sport Dave Portnoy announced that he might be quitting crypto trading, after purchasing $200,000 in Bitcoin and a huge quantity of other cryptocurrencies such as Chainlink (Link) just a week ago. Portnoy took to his Twitter account on August 21 and said that he sold off all of his holdings in cryptocurrencies, which he recently bought on August 13. He stated that he now owns zero Bitcoin (BTC).   Panic Selling Ruins Bull Run Portnoy hosted the Winklevoss twins at his home on August 13, who explained to him thoroughly how cryptocurrency trading works. The meeting event enabled the Gemini co-founders to introduce Portnoy into crypto trading. Cameron and Tyler Winklevoss not only explained the basics of Bitcoin to Portnoy but also taught him how to trade on the Gemini cryptocurrency exchange. Portnoy had already deposited $250,000 into his Gemini account before the twins had arrived.  The meeting with the twins then resulted in Portnoy investing $200,000 worth of Bitcoin and allocating $50,000 to Chainlink (LINK). A few days later, he boasted on social media, touting that he was the king of Bitcoin after gaining $98,000 in profits from BTC cryptocurrency. He then began to annoy Bitcoin users by trying to promote small-time altcoin Orchid (OXT) on social media and urged his followers to buy the cryptocurrency. Since Portnoy has more than 1.7 million followers on social media, his promotion of the cryptocurrencies appears to have influenced the valuation of certain cryptos on the markets. But the more seasoned crypto investors on Twitter did not seem to take the bait. Portnoy’s purchase of $50,000 worth of Chainlink token (LINK) did not go as planned as the altcoin saw a 30% decline amid a market correction for the decentralized oracle network. This resulted in a loss of $25,000 for the “Davey Day Trader”, an incident that angered him. Consequently, he announced that he might well be done with cryptocurrencies, for good. Common Trading Tips Traders Ignore The rule of “buy low” and “sell high” is the basic formulae for trading. This applies to a pattern of crypto prices, which shifts between certain price points. Portnoy appears to not have followed this simple rule, with Bitcoin bulls such as crypto analyst Scott Melker criticizing the Barstool Sports founder for his market trading tactics. Certain analysts referred to Portnoy’s “pump and dump” strategy as was criticized by Bitcoin bulls such as devaluating for the crypto community. This case scenario seems to be of bad timing and unfortunate, as Portnoy purchased cryptocurrencies at the top of the current bull cycle, but panicked when the assets began to decline in value on the crypto market. His initiation into cryptocurrency trading has put a spotlight on the reality of price volatility that still exists in markets. The crypto community responded by labeling him as weak for not being able to tolerate the downsides of cryptocurrency trading.

​​Protests Erupt as Alexander Lukashenko Wins Disputed Landslide Election in Crypto Forward Belarus In Belarus, a highly contested election victory for longstanding President Alexander Lukashenko over Svetlana Tikhanovskaya has erupted in protests. Despite the dispute, the Soviet forged dictator’s stay of power may be good news for crypto. Protests and demonstrations broke out in Belarus as President Alexander Lukashenko’s re-election was announced in a landslide victory over candidate Svetlana Tikhanovskaya. As reported on Aug 9, Lukashenko won the election with more than 80% of the vote which has been condemned almost universally as a rigged election and outraged surrounding European nations. Challenger Tikhanovskaya publically condemned the results. She said, “I believe my own eyes, the majority was for us […] We do not recognize the election results. We have seen real protocols. We urge those who believe that their voice was stolen not to remain silent.” Lukashenko, Belarus and Blockchain Lukashenko has been the President of Belarus since the dissolution of the Soviet Union, which he incidentally voted against. He has been the only president in the office of the European nation since 1994, and is regarded as one of the last dictators in Europe. In 2019, Lukashenko even proposed using the surplus power from the country’s nuclear power plant to mine Bitcoin and sell them to boost Belarus’ economy. The nuclear plant is under construction and set to be opened by the end of 2020. Decree No.8 In December 2017, under Lukashenko’s guidance, Belarus adopted Decree No.8 which stipulates the right of physical bodies to perform mining activity and came into the country’s regulation in March 2018. Belarus may be a small nation but under the disputed leader Lukashenko’s rule they have paved the way for cryptocurrency exchanges to operate in a completely transparent regulatory space. With ongoing development in the legal and regulatory space—Belarus has been considered as one of the best cryptocurrency spaces to work in for exchanges in the twenty-first century. Lukashenko may hold power for now, but the nation of Belarus does not appear willing to let the Soviet relic hold on to power for too much longer, despite his penchant for innovation. 

​​Former People’s Bank of China deputy governor calls Bitcoin a “commercial success” Despite China’s reluctance to regulate cryptocurrencies in the country, many anecdotes suggest higher officials both understand and acknowledge the potential of a digital currency-based economy. The latest Chinese official to speak about Bitcoin is Wu Xiaoling, former deputy governor of the nation’s central bank, the People’s Bank of China. Blockchain’s most successful application As reported by local publication Sina this weekend, Xiaoling considers Bitcoin the most commercially successful application of blockchain technology, adding countries and corporations have much to learn in terms of application. Xiaoling points out digital currencies, or the digitization of existing currencies such as the Digital Yuan must be “rooted” in financial services. Examples include investments, financing, and fulfilling transactions via a verifiable blockchain framework. She notes digital assets are versatile; finding their place as either a currency, payment instrument, virtual goods, and even as securities in certain frameworks. Xiaoling was presumably referring to the tokenization of real-world assets as “virtual goods,” an application of cryptocurrencies that some consider significant. However, despite their positives, Xiaoling calls for “mature” management rules and financial infrastructure to support digital currencies. She explicitly notes the innovation does not supersede existing financial regulations: “IN THE FUTURE, THE DIGITAL CURRENCY WILL INCREASINGLY BE INTEGRATED INTO SOCIAL BEHAVIOR, AND WE MUST HAVE A PRUDENT AND OBJECTIVE UNDERSTANDING OF IT.” Bitcoin volatility is harming Xiaoling, who currently serves as the chairman of Beijing’s Tsinghua University, wrote in “Talking with Leading Cadres about Blockchain” that no other application of blockchain technology has eclipsed Bitcoin. As reported by CryptoSlate last month, the above-mentioned publication is aimed at Chinese parliamentary officials published by the Communist Party of China. It contains trends about blockchain and cryptocurrencies, including how digital currencies began and achieved popularity as a concept. Xiaoling doesn’t see Bitcoin replacing state-issued currencies. She notes the pioneer digital asset has a “fatal weakness” in terms of not holding a stable value — referring to Bitcoin’s infamous volatile nature. She indicates the volatility aspect is why governments treat Bitcoin as a virtual asset instead of a currency, as the latter has historically held stable values and do fluctuate daily. Meanwhile, China continues to foray ahead with its grandiose digital currency plans. The country has earmarked millions of dollars for digital currency-ecosystems and is readying its Digital Yuan for the 2022 Winter Olympics in Beijing.
