Army MEDCOM is set to lose 11.3% of its doctors/providers over the next calendar year. MEDCOM currently has a total of 4,263 doctors/providers which comprise the makeup of General Practitioners, Specialists, Dentists, Veterinarians as well as Physician’s Assistants (though they’re not doctors). 9.5% have approved retirement packets, and another 1.8% have tentative retirement/REFRAD/UQR packets working through the system. The rank and numbers are as follows: 246 Colonels - 85 retiring, 22 tentative 480 Lt. Colonels - 72 retiring, 19 tentative 944 Majors - 232 retiring, 29 tentative 1865 Captains - 15 retiring, 8 tentative These numbers portray a significant loss to a critical component of the military. This is why the military has been paying such high retention and incentive bonuses to those in the medical field. These numbers also aren’t being talked about anywhere else that I’ve seen. The loss of doctors and medical professionals has already been felt by families for years now as appointments for routine exams get pushed back months, and specialty care takes even longer for an appointment. The hardship imposed on service members and their families will likely continue to get worse as a tenth of the provider community is set to leave over the next several months.
