CJI says India’s abortion law is liberal, pro-choice and far ahead of other countries

Chief Justice of India Chandrachud observed India's abortion law is liberal, pro-choice and far ahead of other countries. A married woman's plea to terminate her 26-week pregnancy was heard in court. ASG Bhati said the MTP Act allowed abortion beyond 24 weeks if a board of doctors agree. The woman's counsel submitted medical prescriptions showing she suffered from postpartum psychosis. The court referred the prescriptions to an AIIMS medical board to evaluate if alternate medication was available to protect woman and foetus. The case was listed for Oct 16.
