U.S. returns ancient artifacts to Cambodia 30 artifacts that were taken from Cambodia to the U.S. have been returned, according to the U.S. Department of Justice press office. Among the transferred items are a sculpture of Skanda on a peacock and a 10th-century monumental sculpture of Ganesha stolen from the Khmer capital of Ko Ker. "During the civil conflicts of the late 20th century, statues and other objects were stolen from Ko Ker and other archaeological sites in Cambodia, after which they entered the international art market through an organized network of looters. The looters in Cambodia first took the statues from their original sites. Then they transported them to the border between Cambodia and Thailand, there transferring them to brokers who, in turn, transported them to Khmer artifact dealers located in Thailand, especially Bangkok. These dealers would sell the artifacts to local or international customers, who would either keep the pieces or sell them on the international art market."

Blinken draws distinctions between US and Russia as he seeks to make case for US partnership in Africa US Secretary of State Antony Blinken on Monday drew firm distinctions between the United States and Russia as he sought to make the case that the US is the better partner for countries in Africa. In a speech about the Biden administration's "strategy for Sub-Saharan Africa," delivered in Pretoria, South Africa, US diplomat argued that "the United States and African nations can't achieve any of our shared priorities - whether that's recovering from the pandemic, creating broad-based economic opportunities, addressing the climate crisis, expanding energy access, revitalizing democracies, or strengthening the free and open international order - we can't do any of that if we don't work together as equal partners." "Our strategy is rooted in the recognition that Sub-Saharan Africa is a major geopolitical force - one that shaped our past, is shaping our present, and will shape our future," Blinken said.

Stacey Abrams explains why she was 'anti-abortion' until she went to college Georgia Democratic gubernatorial nominee Stacey Abrams said Sunday that she was "anti-abortion" until she went to college and met a friend who gave her a new perspective on the contentious issue. "I've thought about my faith a great deal. In fact, I was anti-abortion until I went to college. And there I met a friend who has my shared faith values, but we started having conversations about what reproductive care and abortion care really is. And when I talk about that, it was an experience that I had because she was able to give me a different perspective," Abrams told. "This is health care. This is about a woman's right to control her body. ... And that, for me as a matter of faith, means that I don't impose those values systems on others. More importantly, I protect her rights, I protect her humanity and that should be my responsibility."

Joe Biden's hugely consequential Covid isolation A fatigued, runny-nosed President Joe Biden entered Covid solitude on July 21 with his legislative agenda stalled, a standoff brewing with the House speaker and an unfinished plan to kill the world's top terrorist with a drone. More than 2 weeks later, Biden's second stint in isolation appears to be ending, with his agenda suddenly revived, tensions with China dramatically ratcheted up and the terrorist dead. The two-plus weeks Biden has spent with just his German Shepherd for company have proved some of the weightiest of his presidency, with his once-bleak legislative fortunes enjoying a surprise turnabout and his foreign policy shaken by events across the globe. Even some White House staffers said they felt a certain degree of whiplash, and Biden himself has mused to confidants at the sudden turn of events.

Pregnancy qualifies a woman for a tax deduction in Georgia In the U.S. state of Georgia, women from the 6th week of pregnancy will be able to claim a tax deduction for an unborn child, the state Department of Revenue says. Taxpayers filing their 2022 returns can claim a $3,000 deduction for an unborn child with a "detectable human heartbeat." To do so, they will need to provide appropriate medical records or "other supporting documentation." On July 20, Georgia passed a law banning abortions. Recall that on June 24 the U.S. Supreme Court struck down Roe v. Wade, a precedent-setting case in which the federal government had guaranteed the right to terminate a pregnancy.

Twitter calculated the cost of the conflict with The standoff between social network Twitter and billionaire Elon Musk is costing the parties to the conflict dearly. Twitter's Q2 financial statements include a comment that the social network incurred $33 million in costs to prepare for a deal with Musk. The social network estimated that the "uncertainty" caused by the "deferred acquisition" cost it 1% of its quarterly revenue. Twitter has made no secret of the fact that its costs will rise in light of the pending litigation. It has already hired Wachtell, Liptgon, Rosen & Katz LLP, a well-known law firm in the U.S. market, whose lawyers must convince Musk to stick to the original agreement and buy the company for $44 billion.

Polio virus detected in New York City, residents urged to get vaccinated The New York State Department of Health is recommending that residents get vaccinated against polio after the virus was found in Rockland County sewage. "The best way to protect New York City and its children from polio is to maintain high immunity in the community through vaccination," State Health Commissioner Mary T. Bassett. In Rockland, the vaccination rate among 2-year-olds is 60.5%, compared with a state average of 79.1%, according to the state health department website. Mild or wiped out forms of polio are accompanied by symptoms of an acute respiratory viral illness. In severe forms, the disease affects the nervous system. Under the influence of the virus, nerve cells are destroyed and die, leading to the development of paresis and paralysis. In addition to damage to the nervous system, in some cases myocarditis develops.

Pelosi's stop in Taipei is the first time that a US House speaker has visited Taiwan in 25 years. Her trip comes at a low point in US-China relations and despite warnings from the Biden administration against a stop in Taiwan. Pelosi and the congressional delegation that accompanied her said in a statement on Tuesday that the visit "honors America's unwavering commitment to supporting Taiwan's vibrant democracy." "Our discussions with Taiwan leadership will focus on reaffirming our support for our partner and on promoting our shared interests, including advancing a free and open Indo-Pacific region," the statement said. "America's solidarity with the 23 million people of Taiwan is more important today than ever, as the world faces a choice between autocracy and democracy."

Stewart and veterans slam Republicans over stalling bill to help those affected by toxic burn pits Comedian Jon Stewart and veterans' advocates on Monday called on senators to stay overnight when they return to Capitol Hill to pass a stalled bill aimed at expanding health care access for military veterans who became ill after being exposed to toxic burn pits. "They're allowed to stay open past five," Stewart said on the US Capitol steps Monday morning, joining burn pit protesters who have remained there over the weekend as the bill remains in limbo. "So my suggestion to this Senate would be when you come back, if all the members aren't here, keep the lights on. Keep the doors open. And don't leave here tonight, until you do the right thing by these folks."

@Musk was accused of being unprincipled because of his lawsuits with Twitter Elon Musk didn't even probably plan to buy Twitter, with which he is now suing. The billionaire could have made this whole scandal for the sake of hype. Lawyers representing Twitter said in court that the April agreement with Elon Musk doesn't use the share of questionable accounts as a factor in determining the outcome of the deal. The text of the agreement makes it clear that the company is only quoting its estimates on this metric, and the actual level could be higher. Musk originally signed the agreement on such terms. The problem with the number of bots in the social network audience in general is artificially exaggerated by Musk, according to Twitter representatives.

But the visit to self-governing Taiwan is still only tentative, as China continues to issue warnings about its reaction to the House speaker's possible visit to the island (U.S.-China relations are tense largely over the Taiwan issue). There are thousands of people watching Pelosi's flight in real time.

Thousands of cows buried in Kansas Leading U.S. cattle fattening companies sent 1,000-pound cow carcasses to a Kansas landfill, where they were flattened by forklifts and mixed with garbage after thousands of animals died from heat in June, documents obtained by Reuters show. Other cattle were buried in untidy graves, one feed company reported. None of these are typical methods of disposing of corpses. But so many cows died in the unusual heat and humidity that businesses that normally process carcasses into pet food and fertilizer were overwhelmed, forcing the state government and cattle fattening companies to take emergency measures.

Sprite to "relocate" for the sake of the environment Two of The Coca-Cola Company's largest brands in North America are applying closed-loop economy support solutions to plastic packaging. According to the company's press office, DASANI is producing bottles made from 100% recycled PET plastic (except for caps and labels), while Sprite is switching from green to clear plastic to increase the likelihood of recycling that material into new beverage bottles. Sprite is changing all plastic PET packaging from its signature green color to clear as of Aug. 1. Although green PET is recyclable, the recycled material is more likely to become disposable items. In addition to the switch to clear bottles, Sprite is introducing a new visual identity system with an updated logo and package design. Sprite's packaging graphics will retain the brand's recognizable green hue and include a prominent "Recycle Me" inscription.

Catching Kraken: U.S. authorities suspect exchange of circumventing sanctions Cryptocurrency company Kraken, worth $11 billion, faces a fine from the U.S. Office of Foreign Assets Control (O.F.A.C.). The company is suspected of providing services to residents of Iran, which is prohibited by U.S. jurisdiction. Kraken had 1,522 users with residences in Iran, 149 in Syria and 83 in Cuba, according to internal company documents released by founder Jesse Powell last month. U.S. companies are banned from providing services to citizens of all of these countries. The U.S. Treasury Department has been examining the cryptocurrency company for violations of the law since 2019. The reason was an accusation by former Treasury Department employee Nathan Peter Runyon. If fined, Kraken would become the largest organization from the digital asset world to face sanctions in the form of monetary penalties from the O.F.A.C.
