Hari ini 112 tahun yang lalu, kapal RMS Titanic melanggar aisberg sebelum tenggelam ke dasar Laut Atlantik.. Titanic merupakan kapal terbesar & tercanggih ketika itu, dibina oleh syarikat perkapalan British terkemuka White Star Line & direka untuk menjadi kapal persiaran mewah terunggul dengan kemudahan hotel terkemuka. Dilancarkan pada 1911, Titanic memulakan pelayaran pertamanya dari Southampton, England pada 10 April 1912 membawa lebih 2,200 penumpang & anak kapal. Sebahagian besar daripada penumpangnya adalah orang kaya & ternama. Pada malam 14 April, Titanic melalui kawasan di utara Laut Atlantik yang terkenal dengan aisbergnya. Walaupun mendapat amaran daripada kapal lain berdekatan, Titanic berlayar pada kelajuan penuh & tak sedikit pun memperlahan. Sekitar jam 11.40 malam itu, peninjau mengesan aisberg besar betul-betul di laluan Titanic. Kru cuba mengelak dengan membelokkan kapal, namun segalanya sudah terlambat. Bahagian tepi badan Titanic melanggar aisberg tersebut & menyebabkan kerosakan teruk. Air masuk ke bahagian bawah kapal & perlahan-lahan menarik kapal itu ke bawah. Bot-bot penyelamat dilancarkan, namun tak mencukupi untuk menampung semua penumpang & kru. Dalam kekalutan, ramai terjun ke laut yang sejuk membeku lalu mati dek hipotermia. Dalam tempoh 2 jam 40 minit, Titanic tenggelam sepenuhnya. Kapal RMS Carpathia yang menerima isyarat kecemasan daripada Titanic hanya tiba beberapa jam kemudian, sekadar berjaya menyelamatkan lebih 700 mangsa. Selebihnya, sekitar 1,500 nyawa terkorban. Tenggelamnya Titanic mendorong perubahan drastik dalam peraturan keselamatan maritim, khususnya keperluan kapal membawa bot penyelamat yang cukup untuk kesemua penumpang & krunya, serta penambahbaikan sistem komunikasi. Titanic, kapal yang dianggap ‘takkan boleh tenggelam’ itu menjadi simbol keangkuhan & tragedi dahsyat dalam sejarah.
