| 6 | 🔓 New BitLocker bypass discovered?
Security researcher Jonas Lyk has unveiled a new attack technique called “Bitskrieg”. The method is said to enable access to a Windows system protected by BitLocker, even though TPM, Secure Boot, VBS and BitLocker are active.
What’s interesting is that the attack does not target BitLocker’s cryptography itself, but rather the Windows Recovery Environment (WinRE) and its interaction with the TPM.
According to the published analysis, the Windows Emergency Management Service (EMS) is activated via the recovery environment. It is then claimed that access to the already decrypted file system is possible via a serial console – without knowledge of the user password or the BitLocker recovery key.
Important:
- The published proof-of-concept originates from the researcher themselves.
- There is currently no independent confirmation or Microsoft advisory available.
- The implications for current Windows versions are still unclear.
If the technique is confirmed, this would be yet another example of how the greatest vulnerability is often not the encryption itself, but the processes surrounding boot, recovery and system administration.
The attack also works on physical machines- use a usb to com cable- get one that dont require its driver to download.
This works all the way back to Windows XP.
