AMU and Menzies School of Health Research Host 3-Day Capacity Building Training on Microscopic Malaria Diagnosis Arba Minch University's College of Medicine and Health Sciences in collaboration with Australia's Menzies School of Health Research successfully hosted a comprehensive three day training program on Microscopic Malaria Diagnosis from July 10-12, 2024. The training convened skills of medical laboratory technicians to diverse health facilities including AMU and EPHI. Dr. Desta Galcha, Chief Executive Director of the College of Medicine and Health Sciences, emphasized the training's pivotal role in advancing expertise in malaria diagnostics. He underscored the importance of collaborative efforts in improving healthcare outcomes and reaffirmed AMU's commitment to strengthening partnerships for future health challenges. Dr. Tamiru Shibiru, Principal Investigator of the research project, highlighted collaborative efforts with Australia's Menzies School of Health Research focusing on alternative malaria treatment, particularly vivax. He noted that clinical trials and quality control evaluations have revealed a significant skill gap among experts in malaria diagnosis, prompting the need for targeted training sessions. He also said that the training is a preparatory step for upcoming research initiatives along with Menzies School and starting in the next two months’ time. Its goal is to strengthen laboratory technicians' capacities in both routine healthcare and clinical trial settings, aiming to enhance malaria diagnosis quality, improve patient care, and foster scientific research and innovation in combating malaria effectively. Michael M. Watene, a WHO Level I Malaria Microscopist from Human Quality Assessment Services, Nairobi, Kenya, praised the training's comprehensive approach to detection, species identification, and quantification in malaria microscopy. He commended the program for equipping participants with skills to diagnose both common and less common species such as Plasmodium falciparum, Plasmodium vivax, Plasmodium malariae and Plasmodium ovale, thereby bolstering clinical trial research capabilities and healthcare service delivery. Lidet Beyene, a participant and Medical Laboratory expert at Woze Health Center, spoke highly of the training's advanced techniques and emphasis on quality assurance in malaria microscopy. "This training will significantly enhance our ability to accurately diagnose and manage malaria cases," she noted. Geremew Gashaw, Laboratory Department Coordinator at Arba Minch General Hospital, reflected on the training's impact on his professional growth, stating, "Acquiring new skills has filled significant gaps in my understanding of malaria microscopy enabling me to provide more accurate diagnosis and improve patient care." The training concluded with the distribution of certificates of participation to acknowledge their successful completion of the program. Arba Minch University The Center of Bright Future! AMU Holds Empowering Awareness Campaign for School Girls at Geresse Kemele Oro Primary School, South Ethiopia Region AMU-IUC's Transversal Institutional Strengthening Project (TISP-7) has recently held an impactful "Empowering Awareness Campaign" on July 3, 2024, at Geresse Kemele Oro Primary School in South Ethiopia Region. The campaign entitled "Promote Gender Equality in Education and Empower School Girls to Pursue their Passions and Dreams," aimed to address the critical issue of girls' education within the school community. Dr. Genaye Tsegaye, Leader of TISP-7, highlighted that the primary objective of the campaign was to raise awareness among the school community, including parents and all community members, about the importance of gender equality and supporting female students in their education. The aim was to address factors contributing to high dropout rates among school girls such as economic challenges, household responsibilities, lack of educational resources, and early marriages. Mrs. Bayush Tesfaye, Coordinator of TISP-7, outlined the event's comprehensive approach which included screening a documentary on the challenges faced by school girls, presenting preliminary research findings, facilitating discussions with parents and community members to garner support for girls' education, distributing multilingual flyers with ideas for empowering school girls, and providing motivational gifts like t-shirts with empowering messages, exercise books, pens, and pencils to recognize achievement among both boys and girls. The AMU-IUC Project Manager, Dr. Fasil Eshetu, stated that AMU-IUC firmly believes that every child, regardless of gender, deserves access to a quality education. This school campaign is a testament to that belief. Dr. Fasil revealed that AMU-IUC is currently working on equipping Kemele Oro School with ICT resources including Solar Electricity, Internet Access Computer Lab, and Digital Library through E-learning Resources. Ato Wondimu Alemu, School Director, expressed appreciation for AMU-IUC's ongoing commitment to the school community such as the positive impact of TISP-7's focus on girls' participation and effectiveness within the school, effective agroforestry best practices demo sites by Research sub-project six (RSP6), and the ongoing effort of TISP1 to equip Kemele Oro School with ICT resources and electricity.
